Director/Vice President of Development

The Fraser Institute has an opening in our Vancouver office for a Director/Vice President of Development to lead the fundraising efforts of our highly successful organization with revenues in excess of $12 million. The person we seek is a senior fundraising professional with an interest in public policy, who can engage comfortably with high level donors, and has established connections within the Canadian business community.  

Reporting directly to the President and Executive Vice President and supported by a Development team, the Director/Vice President of Development is responsible for providing strategic direction and overseeing the Institute’s fundraising programs including major gifts, corporate relationships, foundations, and sponsorship and events.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Create and execute a fundraising strategy to meet the Institute’s fundraising and growth goals, maximizing revenue streams for the Fraser institute through a variety of programs including major gifts, annual giving, monthly giving, planned giving, event sponsorship, foundation grants, endowments, etc.;
  • Articulate the case for support to donors for the Institute generally and for specific research centers and projects;
  • Use your network to identify, connect and build relationships with new individual and corporate donors and identify opportunities for funding and event sponsorships;
  • Develop and implement a plan for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual and corporate donors;
  • Actively participate in our annual planning process ensuring research and program plans are supported by appropriate fundraising efforts;
  • Manage and execute the development department budget;
  • Develop, mentor and motivate a high performing team of fundraising professionals;
  • Oversee the donations processing procedures including tax receipting and reconciliation process with accounting;
  • Oversee the Institute’s donor database and manage the handing of donor information;
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Institute’s research and program directors and executive team;
  • Frequent travel and evening/weekend work required.

About you:

  •   You are passionate about public policy and the Institute’s mission;
  • You have 10+ years in a senior development role (preferably in the non-profit/charitable sector) and have demonstrated success in reaching significant fundraising targets through prospecting, donor development and event sponsorship/ticket sales;
  •  You love to network and have established relationships within the Canadian business community;
  •  You have experience mentoring, developing and motivating fundraising staff;
  • You have professional writing and editing experience, including writing and editing fundraising emails, letters and proposals;
  • You have excellent verbal communication skills and are able to present yourself in a professional, confident manner both in person and over the phone;
  • You’re an ambitious go-getter with strong organizational skills and you pay close attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, prioritize, work to deadlines, and you are excited to learn and grow with the organization.

Preferred:

  • You have experience with fundraising software including Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce.
