Hope Air
Region: Toronto Metro area Type: Full time
Location: Toronto Salary: (not entered)

For many Canadians, healthcare coverage starts at the door of the doctor’s office, but getting to the doctor, and any related travel costs, falls to the individual. Over 20% of Canada’s population live in small and rural communities where specialized medical care is not available, and a trip to see a medical specialist might involve a 16 hour car or bus ride.

For low-income patients living in these communities, travelling long distances to their medical appointments comes at a cost of time and money and this lack of access leads to delays in treatment and poorer health outcomes.

Hope Air was founded in 1986 by Joan Rogers and Jinnie Bradshaw, C.M., who wanted to make travelling to healthcare less burdensome for low-income people. Since then, individuals and groups from all across the country have come together to help their fellow Canadians get to medical care.

Hope Air is a unique and essential component of Canada’s universal healthcare system. As Canada’s only national charity providing free flights and other related services to low-income Canadians who must travel to medical care that does not exist in their communities, Hope Air exists to bridge the distance to the medical care they need. Without the access Hope Air provides, Canada’s national system of universal healthcare coverage would fall short of its promise.

Hope Air was chosen by MoneySense magazine as one of Canada’s top-rated charities for 2019 and has a four-out-of-four star rating from Charity Intelligence.

How Hope Air Does It
• Hope Air purchases airfare on commercial airlines with the generous support of donors. Approximately 70% of Hope Air’s flights are purchased with donated funds.
• Hope Air has many incredible airline partners who donate seats on their flights.
• Hope Air is proud to have the support of volunteer pilots who use their personal aircraft to fly patients to their appointments.
• Hope Air, in collaboration with Health PEI, will pay for a Confederation Bridge pass or ferry fare for Islanders in financial need to attend medical appointments in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Office provides strategic leadership for Hope Air and is responsible for establishing and executing the major goals and objectives as confirmed in conjunction with the Board. The CEO provides leadership, direction and guidance to the organization’s activities, analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of operations, and develops and maintains appropriate organizational structure and effective personnel. The CEO coordinates major activities, and represents Hope Air to regulatory bodies, other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders, supporters, volunteers and the general public.

In assuming this leadership position, the new CEO will want to focus on the following key priority areas:

• Establish credibility and relationships of trust with Board, staff, volunteers, donors, partners.

• Develop and implement plans to increase brand recognition and profile, and increase revenue to meet next level of growth.
• Retain and ensure appropriate staffing to meet needs as organization continues to grow.
• Optimize use of new technology including digital.

Hope Air is a well-performing national charity with a mission that has undeniable appeal. For the right leader, this is a unique and wonderful opportunity to have positive impact on the lives of Canadians who struggle to access the healthcare they need. Caring and patient-centric, the organization explores new and creative options to address those needs, and sees significant opportunity to continue to grow.
