About the British Columbia Teachers' Federation

Founded in 1917, the British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF) is a union of professionals representing over 43,000 public school teachers in the province of BC. As an organization, we are dedicated to advancing learning conditions for students concurrently with advocating for BC’s public school teachers and the teaching profession. We are also deeply committed to democratic decision-making and supporting the engagement of the teachers who make up our member base. Equally, we act on our belief in social justice in schools and the broader community, and actively support our members in striving to achieve equity, inclusion and a more just society for their students today and into the future.

At the BCTF, our team is made up of hardworking and passionate individuals that are eager to bring tangible improvements to teachers, students, the profession of teaching, and public education as mandated by our membership. We know we're only as strong as the incredible people that work with us and for us, as such the BCTF is eager to ensure that staff are supported in developing programs and services for members. If you feel you have the skills to help us continue to make a difference in the lives of others then we want to hear from you.

About the Opportunity

The BCTF currently has an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic Executive Director to join us on a full-time basis in Vancouver, BC.

In this multi-faceted role, you will be responsible for the overall management of BCTF staff, implementation of governance decisions, and the co-ordination of BCTF work. The broader areas of the role include administration, leadership, planning and coordination, management, records, and liaison.

More specifically your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and coordinating all affairs of the BCTF.
  • Managing direct reports that span a range of functions.
  • Working in collaboration with the President, the Vice-Presidents, and the management staff in order to achieve the goals of the BCTF.
  • Drafting reports and recommendations for the Executive Committee.
  • Providing advice and support to the BCTF governance bodies on the policies, procedures, and constitution of the BCTF.
  • Ensuring the decisions of the BCTF governance bodies are implemented and that the services and programs for members are well co-ordinated, responsive, and effective.
  • Providing assistance and advice to the leadership in local organizations on organizational issues and imperatives.
  • Assisting in collectively bargaining with school boards, when required, on behalf of members.

In order to qualify for this role, you will need to have significant previous experience working within a non-profit member-based or public organization along with previous experience in a leadership position, preferably one in a unionized environment. While it is not required to have previously worked within a member-based organization it is a significant asset. An understanding of the needs of public school teachers in BC and a strong commitment to public education and public services is also required.

As our ideal candidate, you will have excellent communication skills in both written and verbal form. Your highly adaptable nature and strong organizational skills will ensure your success as you work towards competing deadlines and managing the requirements of various stakeholders.

Finally, individuals that are passionate about the work they do and are eager to improve public education within BC will excel in this role.
