Job Title:  Indigenous Family Support Worker


Summary:  Kiwassa Neighbourhood House is seeking a welcoming, energetic and creative family support worker / early childhood educator to collaboratively plan, deliver and support a broad range of inclusive family drop-in programs, parent support and education, outreach and capacity building activities. The Indigenous Family Support Worker will be working with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous families, with an aim to create a bridge for Indigenous families to access community-based family resource services. This important role will work collaboratively with Indigenous led organizations and assist with implementation of culturally welcoming spaces within Kiwassa’s Family Programs. We encourage qualified applicants of Indigenous descent to apply.  This position is 28 hrs a week contract position for 1 year, with potential for extension depending on funding. This work includes some evening and Saturday work and reports to the Family Programs Coordinator.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Plan, lead, deliver and evaluate inclusive, multi-cultural drop-in social / educational activities for parents & children ages 0-6, with a particular focus on responding to the needs of Indigenous families.
  • Welcome and facilitate parents’ and children’s participation in activities; provide guidance and support to encourage healthy child development.
  • Offer outreach and family support to parents at two Strong Start neighbourhood locations (Xpey’ Elementary and Tillicum Elementary).
  • Provide one to one advocacy, information and referral support, and bridging to Kiwassa programs and community services and resources for a small caseload of families
  • Participated in Integrated Case Management (ICM), with Social workers and other professionals, as appropriate
  • Facilitate cultural Indigenous activities and encourage families’ participation.
  • Create and maintain safe, welcoming and inclusive environments. Ensure clean, well-organized and appropriate program activity space and equipment.
  • Maintain knowledge of community needs and resources. Provide information, referral Provide outreach to local communities and families, especially Indigenous and under-served populations.
  • Promote the program in the community and help to recruit families to participate.
  • Work collaboratively with Kiwassa staff and community partners.
  • Maintain records and statistics as appropriate.
  • Other duties as required.



Skills, Experience and Qualifications:            

  • ECE certified or training in a related social services field. 
  • Minimum three years’ experience working with families and delivering Indigenous programs.
  • Strong knowledge and experience delivering programs to children ages 0 – 6 years that support their social, creative, physical and emotional development.
  • Experience and ability planning and facilitating workshops for parents.
  • Competence and sensitivity in working with diverse families from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Excellent ability to work as part of a multicultural team.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check
  • Knowledgeable about relevant community resources and experience providing referrals.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Excellent communication skills.




  • This is a 28 hours per week position offering that pays $21/hr + excellent benefits package. This is a 1 year contract with possibility of extension based on future funding.
