Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director oversees a range of functions, bringing a track record of vision and implementation to drive the organization forward. Responsibilities under the purview of the Executive Director include:

  • strategic planning and measuring the growth and impact being made by the organization
  • reporting to and working in close partnership with the Board
  • overseeing and managing budgets
  • fundraising and external stakeholder relations
  • interacting with a broad range of constituency groups
  • overseeing the work of and meaningfully supporting Obesity Canada
  • being a strong and inspirational brand-ambassador for the organization

Overall, the Executive Director draws upon their expertise as a skilled community-builder to foster deep relationships with board members, staff, community partners, media, and funders to realize Obesity Canada’s mission, vision, and any plans determined for the future.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide compassionate leadership and champion the mission, vision, and strategic objectives of Obesity Canada in collaboration with the Board of Directors, staff, and partner organizations, ensuring the mission, operations, and programs remain aligned; work with key stakeholders and Board of Directors to further develop and implement the strategic plan.
  • Lead the operations of the organization, including providing oversight and strategic direction to programs, advocacy, enterprises and core
  • Identify principal risks of Obesity Canada’s operations and implement appropriate strategies to manage and mitigate them.
  • Co-create with Senior Leadership colleagues to ensure the development of a diverse revenue strategy and plan that supports strategic priorities and vision.

Advancing Advocacy and Public Relations Efforts

  • Play an active role in advocacy and stakeholder relations with a primary focus in Canada but within a global network.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with partners, collaborating organizations, government agencies, funders, and other constituency groups across multiple industries and the globe.
  • Alongside the Senior Leadership team, serve as a spokesperson with media, funders, government agencies, relevant advocacy groups and others, and when necessary, to identify appropriate spokespersons to represent the organization.
  • Identify opportunities, strategies, and/or partnerships that enhance the visibility of Obesity Canada’s mission and priorities.
  • Ability to passionately and effectively share Obesity Canada’s vision and work with a range of audiences.

Operational Oversight and Fiscal Sustainability

  • Lead the development and execution of the annual operational plan and budget, ensuring programs, metrics, and key deliverables are aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Advise the Board of all major commitments, liability and risks (internal and external) on a regular and timely basis and suggest mitigation strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership team to manage day-to-day operations and all organization assets in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership team to ensure the development of operational and program plans in alignment with the organization’s strategic priorities, fiscal direction, and people operation policies that will have a real impact on the world.
  • Support all activities of the Board, attend Board and committee meetings, and provide required Executive Director reports.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership team to provide leadership to all aspects of fundraising ensuring that the planning and execution is adequate to provide for all aspects of the organization.

The Person

  • Commitment and alignment with Obesity Canada’s mission, vision and values and willing to be part of an organization that has a global impact.
  • Ability to look ahead and to identify potential long-term opportunities and challenges, and to translate these challenges into sound and achievable strategic priorities and plans.
  • Strong financial management skills with a track record of successfully developing, implementing and monitoring strategic and operational plans.
  • Fundraising development experience and demonstrated public relations/media skills.
  • Strong change management skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in building a culture of transparency, collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with a fully remote office and team. Both domestic and international travel will be required.
  • Understanding of obesity, or the health care industry would be considered an asset.
