As caretakers of a unique National Historic Site, Fort Calgary aims to present its history to connect people by deepening their understanding, enhancing their curiosity and informing their context for contemporary life.

Position Overview:

This position is dependent on Young Canada Works Program funding, and dates are subject to change.

Fort Calgary is recruiting for one (1) Visitor Experience Assistant as part of the 2024 Young Canada Works Program in Heritage Organizations. This role is a perfect summer job opportunity for students with an interest in the history of Calgary and Canada; museums and heritage; or the arts and culture sector who wants to gain wide-ranging experience working at a non-profit.

This role is an essential part of the Content & Experience team. This on-site position will support our visitor service desk, with additional duties in public programs and social media. This position will last 16 weeks (pending funding decision) with an anticipated start date during the week of May 15, 2024.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work at the visitor service desk during operating hours.
  • Act as an ambassador by welcoming visitors to Fort Calgary and ensuring a strong visitor experience.
  • Be responsible for daily opening and closing procedures, admission transactions, and tracking visitor numbers.
  • Provide historical interpretation of exhibition for visitors and answers general questions.
  • Deliver daily walking tours and private tours.
  • Support public programs for our summer offering, including the Walk for Reconciliation, Canada Day, and Heritage Day/Historic Calgary Week.
  • Support the creation of digital content for website and social media platforms.
  • Support administrative marketing tasks for summer programs.
  • Catalogue artifacts on PastPerfect.
  • Assist with other museum duties as needed.


  • Be a current, full-time post-secondary student in History, Social Work, Museum Studies, Indigenous Studies, Canadian Art History, Archaeology, Education, Communications, or another relevant program.
  • Have strong customer/visitor service skills, with an interest in engaging diverse museum visitors and communities.
  • Must be tolerant, non-judgmental with a high degree of compassion and empathy towards vulnerable peoples and those struggling with addictions and or mental health.
  • Have a general knowledge and passion for local history.
  • Bring an understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action for Museums. This knowledge can be through lived or worked experience, or education (or both).
  • Have a solid understanding of social media platforms and MS Office software. Experience with graphic design, Canva, and website maintenance (Squarespace) is an asset.
  • Have experience in research and writing.
  • Be well-rounded and keen to take on a variety of museum roles and responsibilities.
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision, on-site and remotely if necessary.
  • Be able to provide their own laptop, phone, and internet connection (if remote work required).
  • Be flexible with their work schedule hours.

Availability Requirements:

  • This is an onsite position, with availability required Wednesday-Sunday, 9:45 am-5:15 pm, with some additional holidays, from May to late August 2024 (funding dependant).
  • Evening and holiday availability will be required with due coordination.

Candidates must be eligible as per the Young Canada Works guidelines. This includes: 

  • being legally entitled to work in Canada, and
  • being a post-secondary student returning to full-time studies in the Fall 2024 semester.
