About Hike NS

Hike Nova Scotia is a nonprofit organization that encourages and promotes a growing hiking culture throughout our great province. We strive to be the voice for those who hike, walk and snowshoe as well as those who build and maintain hiking trails.

Job Description / Responsibilities

The work of the Youth Hiking Coordinator mainly focuses on increasing Hike NS’s capacity to get more young people outside enjoying parks, hiking trails and other green spaces. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Youth Hiking Coordinator will carry out the following tasks:

  • Coordinate the Young Hikers Program, which supports hiking clubs at schools, after school programs and other organizations
  • Assist in coordinating the Hiker Challenge program, with an emphasis on youth earning badges for hiking certain distances or in certain areas
  • Assist with other Hike NS projects and general administration as required
  • Support the overall work of Hike NS

A typical day might mean emails or calls with hiking club host organizations and hike leaders, developing and distributing hiking club resources, reporting on hiking club events, connecting with youth organizations about the Hiker Challenge, distributing badges and collecting data on the program. The Coordinator will touch base with the ED daily and do both self-directed and collaborative work. This includes administration and correspondence with many partnering organizations.

Because the position is supported by a youth wage subsidy program, this opportunity is only available to youth (up to age 30) who face various barriers to employment. The successful candidate must be:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age when employment begins (inclusive)
  • A Canadian citizen, or permanent resident or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
  • Must live in Nova Scotia

Hike Nova Scotia is committed to equity and respect for all peoples and persons in all of our work. Diverse candidates and qualifications are encouraged.

Working Conditions

The Coordinator will be required to work remotely from their own home office (require their own basic remote office equipment and technology). Must attend regular in-person meetings with co-workers as well as meet with partners. Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must have a valid drivers license.
