The Program
Youth Horizons provides a community-based home in Saanich for female youth, ages 13-18, receiving services through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), where they will be encouraged to learn/develop daily living and life skills and enjoy various recreational and cultural activities within the community.
Using a person-centered, culturally-aware and trauma-informed approach, staff are trained to recognize the effects of trauma, avoid re-traumatizing, help youth cope with the effects through healthy relationship-building and facilitate personal growth by focusing on youth's strengths.

The Position
Scheduling
One (1) permanent full-time position of 40hours per week available: This is a blended Residence Worker position of some awake and some sleep shifts. Hours are set by the employer and are not negotiable.
Thursday through Monday 2300-0700
• 24 hours = Residence Worker - Overnight Awake - Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Grid 10) are not to sleep on shift
• 16 hours = Asleep Residential Night Worker - Sunday and Monday (Grid 5) staff sleep in a secure office for the majority of their shift unless there is a need for support at the program and are paid at Pay grid 5.
On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Residence Worker (Grid 10) working awake overnight shifts, provides behavioral support and supervision to the youth in the home, provide general household cleaning, complete log notes/reports, and handles any crisis situations that may occur.
On Sundays and Mondays, the Asleep Residential Night Worker (Grid 5) provides assistance with evening and morning routines, otherwise they sleep in a secure office for the majority of their shift unless there is a need for support at the program.
This position will require BCGEU union membership.

In Your Role You Will
• Support youth to reach their goals by implementing individualized service plans (ISPs).
• Assist the youth with daily living activities and provide life skills training for the youth such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care skills and personal finance
• Transport the youth to and attend/participate in scheduled activities, appointments, shopping or leisure activities
• Housekeeping duties (May include cleaning, laundry, dishwashing, cleaning floors, mowing lawns, grocery shopping, cleaning equipment and food preparation) or assist youth to complete these tasks, etc.
• Provide emotional support and feedback to youth and their families.
• Administer medication or first aid as required and according to policy/procedure
• Recognize, analyze, and deal with potential emergency situations such as aggressive behavior according to their Behaviour Safety Plan to ensure no harm comes to them or the public.
• With the team, participate in assessing and planning for individuals in program; document, implement and contribute to program evaluation.
• Assist with case management, maintain reports such as statistics, logs and daily activities relating to youth.

WJS adheres to provincial/legislated communicable disease prevention protocols. Some of our community health care providers/stakeholders may require WJS employees to be vaccinated in order to be able to enter establishments while supporting WJS individuals/clients in service.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
• A Diploma or Degree in in Social Work, Child and Youth Work, other human services, Education, Sociology or Psychology, Criminology, or related field.
• Minimum 2 years recent child and youth care experience
• Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Previous experience in a group home and providing trauma informed care
• Valid BC Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract with a reliable, safe vehicle that has appropriate insurance
Other requirements:
• Valid CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, and Food Hygiene and Sanitation certificates (or ability to obtain within probation period)
• Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certificate and/or MANDT and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within probation period)
• Physician’s note confirming suitability, including immunization records and a negative tuberculosis screening test
• Positive behavior supports experience
**Successful applicants will be required to participate in MCFD screening prior to confirmed employment with WJS Canada.**
