Context

The Refugee Centre is dedicated to facilitating the settlement and integration of newcomers into the broader Montreal community. Grounded in a holistic and sustainable approach to support, we aim to re-establish the way nonprofits work and strengthen the communities we serve. As a young and growing organization, we are proud of our dynamic team of workers, interns, and volunteers who are passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of asylum seekers and refugees.

Responsibilities
  • Welcome and direct clients and visitors at the reception
  • Respond to client requests at the door, on the phone, and by email. This includes booking appointments, giving information about the refugee claim pathway, helping with address changes, referring clients to the right resources and organisations, helping clients log into their accounts and portals, explaining government correspondences and orienting clients about the services provided at the Refugee Centre
  • Notice trends in client requests to find creative and efficient solutions
  • Create and update documents, posters, forms, presentations, websites and videos for asylum seekers
  • Translate documents from English to French and Spanish
  • Manage language classes including student registration, communication with the teacher and processing payments and reimbursements
  • Assist workshops helping asylum seekers complete their refugee claims in the IRCC portal
  • Ensure a clean, functional and beautiful office space
  • Contribute to organising social events for staff and volunteers
Qualifications
  • Strong spoken and written English and French
  • Spanish, Arabic or Farsi are a strong asset
  • Deep resonance with the cause of The Refugee Centre
  • Value justice, compassion and empowerment
  • Experience working/volunteering with asylum seekers in Canada (Lived experience as a refugee or asylum seeker would be seen as a strength)
  • Proficiency in using Google Workspace including Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets and Google Admin
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software applications
  • Knowledge of Canva, Notion, Jotform and Adobe Creative Cloud applications are an asset
  • Proven expertise in task management, showcasing exceptional organization skills and a methodical approach to learning
  • Confidence in communicating with diverse individuals and groups, cultural sensitivity, and assertive boundary-setting
  • Demonstrated sense of initiative and creative problem solving
  • Healthy and disciplined lifestyle with an interest in joining our running club and book club
