JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Finance and Operations Director contributes to DBNC’s overall mission, vision, and values by leading and supporting seamless fiscal, operational, and IT management systems, procedures, and processes. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director will play a pivotal role in day-to-day financial and operational management, strategic improvement partnerships, and supervision of finance, operations, and IT staff. This role ensures DBNC’s policies, practices, and procedures are responsive and proactive in alignment with the organization’s, ministries’, and legislative mandates.

The Director will oversee all aspects of finance and operations, including financial reporting and analysis, internal controls and auditing, compiling reports to ministry funders, and preparation, submission, and monitoring of the annual budget. This role will also be responsible for reporting monthly financial statements and commentary to the Finance and Audit Committee, along with other matters during the year.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Management and Leadership

  • Define the budget associated with the organization’s strategic positioning and approach in order to meet appropriate objectives and organizational action plans
  • Oversee the Finance Team and Operations Administrator and relevant contractors to ensure that they have the required tools; processes and information to meet the organizations goals and analyze any deficiencies
  • Support market sector analysis to source and identify new opportunities and partnerships
  • Create and manage business networks and relationships
  • Implement and promote a culture of collaboration and inclusion with the people committed to the success and continuous improvement of the organization
  • Assist in the design and implementation of new financial processes or initiatives
  • Act as a mentor and coach to the management team, the staff and the partners to ensure the organization’s objectives
  • Contribute as a member of the Leadership Team to the overall operation and strategic development of the Agency as a whole.
  • Assist with performance management, succession planning, employee engagement, and compensation and benefits.

Financial Monitoring and Reporting

  • Lead the research and designing of innovative financing solutions for all levels of the organization
  • Ensure the organization remains compliant with protocols for funders, audits and CRA
  • Manage the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with the audit firm.
  • Lead the organization’s financial management technology-based solutions and platforms
  • Support Managers through the due diligence process of financial reporting
  • Annual preparation of budgets for the organization and individual programs, including the submission of proposals to potential funders
  • Manage the cash position, investments, and bank reconciliations
  • Prepare and deliver position and portfolio-level reporting
  • Use external networks to deepen understanding and knowledge
  • Oversee the evaluation process that may include valuation and return analysis, financial modeling, sensitivity analysis, impact analysis and other data etc.
  • Negotiate, prepare and monitor all vendor and consultant contracts
  • Ensure Financial integrity in grant management, including budget adherence and reporting

Qualifications (Skills/Knowledge/Experience):

  • University Degree and CPA/CGA Designation preferred with a minimum of 5-7 years of leadership positions preferably in a complex non-profit environment.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and federal and provincial legislation affecting charities/ non-profits
  • Knowledge of GAAP requirements in a non-profit environment
  • A passion for gender, racial, economic, and social justice, along with a commitment to DBNC's mission, vision and values
  • High level of ethics and empathy
  • Proven experience in people management with the ability to initiate/manage cross-functional teams and multi-disciplinary projects.  
  • Good understanding of processes, policies, and procedures required for supporting a non-profit organization. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural team environment and the ability to coordinate and direct staff. 
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills   
  • Developed analytical, synthesis, critical thinking skills, and decision-making skills, enabling innovative solutions
  • Independent worker who can maintain a flexible schedule (occasional evening and weekend work required)
  • Demonstrated reliability, autonomy and a strong capacity for initiative. 
  • Able to learn new technologies and platforms quickly 
  • Able to build trusting relationships and be a team player
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Effective at problem solving and negotiating resolutions
