Director, SCLS Board of Directors (2025)

Scarborough Community Legal Services (SCLS) is a non-profit community legal clinic. We have been providing free legal services to low-income residents of Scarborough since 1982 and are funded primarily by Legal Aid Ontario. We assist low-income individuals and groups with accessing justice and protecting their legal rights by providing free legal services and working to change systems to benefit people living in poverty. We work with community members, organizations, and social justice groups to achieve our mission. Our four key strategies are: legal services, legal education, community development, and law reform.

Our Board of Directors

Our legal clinic is governed by an independent 13-member volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is elected by community members and is accountable to the membership of the clinic and the community we serve. The Board is responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organization, developing and ensuring adherence to our bylaws and policies, setting the strategic direction of the clinic, and providing direction to and supervision of the Executive Director. Our Board members bring a mix of skills and backgrounds to the table and are committed to ensuring the success of SCLS.

Qualifications

We are seeking new Board Members to join our team until October 2026. Given our organization’s current needs, we are seeking individuals with strong community connections and community organizing skills.

You should have:

  • A commitment to social justice and serving the needs of low-income individuals and families.
  • Support for our values and mission.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with Board Members and staff.
  • A personal commitment to give the time necessary to meet the responsibilities of a Board Member.

Additionally, preference will be given to:

  • Residents of East Scarborough;
  • Members of marginalized communities—particularly Black, Francophone, and Indigenous communities—and applicants who have used clinic services in the past, whether as clients or community members, are especially encouraged to apply ; and/or
  • Applicants with experience in the non-profit sector, particularly those with experience in community service and organizing.

Expected Commitment

Board Members must have the ability to commit the time and resources to prepare for and attend monthly board meetings which are held in the early evening on the last Tuesday of each month. Board members are also expected to participate on Board Committees and to attend our Annual General Meeting. On average, this position requires a time commitment of approximately 4 hours per month.
