The Vancouver Art Gallery believes creativity is fundamental to an open and engaged world. Bring your experience in Security and Building Operations to one of Canada’s leading arts institutions in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

As a Control Room Assistant at the Vancouver Art Gallery, you'll play a key role in maintaining security and smooth operations. From the Security Office, you'll oversee systems like CCTV, access control, and art monitoring, while managing inquiries, alarms, and coordinating responses. You'll ensure the gallery’s safety, including after-hours security and incident management. You will work independently after your initial training, with regular reviews to make sure everything runs perfectly. You are detail-oriented and enjoy being at the heart of building operations.

What You Will Do

•        Monitor and manage all security systems (CCTV, alarms, access control, art monitoring, HVAC, fire alarms, radios, key control) and respond to alarms as needed.

•        Assist the Director/Manager of Operations and gallery leadership during emergencies.

•        Handle security issues with professionalism and efficiency, both inside and outside the gallery.

•        Respond to inquiries from staff, visitors, volunteers, and contractors.

•        Conduct regular patrols to ensure the safety of the building, staff, and visitors.

•        Secure the gallery after hours and post-events, following all procedures.

•        Issue and collect keys, ID passes, and key cards for staff, volunteers, and contractors.

•        Assist with security tasks during special events and functions.

•        Support Visitor Services with security and lost-and-found inquiries.

•        Coordinate with third-party security and collaborate with other departments on security needs.

•        Contribute to team planning and initiatives, recommending improvements to meet organizational goals.

•        Communicate with team members to ensure a seamless experience for guests and staff.

•        Promote a respectful and inclusive workplace, ensuring equity, diversity, and Indigenous principles are embedded in all operations.

This position is integral to the Facilities and Building Services team, contributing to the Gallery’s strategic goals and divisional objectives.

What You Bring to the Role

As a Control Room Assistant, you hold a high school diploma with three years of security experience in a computerized environment, ideally in a large public attraction. British Columbia security licensing is essential. Training in BST 1 and 2 is preferred; additional security courses are an asset. Occupational level II First Aid certification is also an asset.

Additional Skills and Abilities

•        Ability to think innovatively and creatively in planning and developing a fresh approach to existing activities, with a continuous improvement perspective and incorporating best practices

•        Knowledge of gallery premises and security regulations, policies, and emergency preparedness

•        Ability to stand and walk for extended periods

•        Tactful and effective communication with the public, staff, volunteers, and contractors

•        Capable of performing basic clerical tasks with precision

•        Keen alertness for detecting and addressing unusual situations

•        Skills in training others on routine security tasks
