At Matsqui-Abbotsford Impact Society, we believe in doing things differently. Our work is rooted in compassion, harm reduction, and the leadership of people with lived and living experience. This winter, we are seeking a temporary Extreme Weather Shelter Supervisor to support operations of our peer-led shelter in collaboration with Abbotsford Drug War Survivors (DWS).

The shelter provides low-barrier overnight refuge for community members during extreme weather events, operating when the official protocol is activated, typically when temperatures fall below 1°C, feel like -1°C, or during extended periods of heavy rain or snow.

This role is part administrative and part operational. The supervisor will coordinate staffing, scheduling, data collection, invoicing, and logistics, while also supporting daily shelter functions and team leadership. The position is 20 hours per week, with the option to pick up additional on-site shelter shifts for up to 37.5 hours per week.

About the Role

The Extreme Weather Shelter operates on a peer-led model emphasizing empowerment, shared decision-making, and community accountability. The supervisor will work collaboratively with the DWS peer network, take direction from people with lived and living experience, and be accountable to both DWS and the Matsqui-Abbotsford Impact Society leadership.

Key responsibilities include coordinating shelter activation and operations, maintaining communication with community partners and the hosting church, and ensuring the space remains safe, welcoming, and well-run.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, and communication among shelter team members
  • Coordinate with DWS peer leadership and ensure shelter operations align with peer governance principles
  • Collect and report required data, statistics, and invoices
  • Liaise with the hosting church and community partners
  • Manage supplies, shopping, laundry, and cleanliness of the space
  • Support shelter activations and general on-site duties as needed
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and compassionate environment for all guests and staff

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Experience in community work, harm reduction, or peer-led initiatives
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively under pressure and in a flexible environment
  • Understanding of peer governance, harm reduction, and trauma-informed practice
  • Comfort taking direction from people with lived and living experience
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle for supply runs is an asset
