The Role

Lighting and Sound Designer/Stage Technician is responsible for providing technical support in the areas of sound, lighting, and set and props building. They will provide technical service for various live events at Maja Prentice theatre and/or other locations. The hired technician will be expected to have significant skills in both sound and lighting as they will be running an event as a sole technician. 

Type of Engagement: Full time

Start Date: June 9 2026

End Date: July 31 2026

Compensation: $5,040 ($18 hr)

This role is part of Summer Ensemble 2026.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Lighting and Sound Designer/StageTechnician hired through Summer Jobs Program will be required to engage in the following tasks and responsibilities: 

  • Operate technical equipment such as sound board (Behringer X32) and lighting board (ETC Element) as required;

  • Connect electrical instruments; 

  • Climb a ladder and work on heights;

  • Lift equipment heavier than 50 lbs;

  • Assemble a lighting and sound cue list based on director’s input; 

  • Program the cues in QLab software; 

  • Design, build, and/or purchase, and/or adapt, paint, construct visual elements of the play such as set elements, props and/or puppets. 

  • Keep up to date with the most recent script changes;

  • Consult with a technical director and facilities manager regarding technical capacity for the design to be realized; 

  • Maintain technical equipment in good working order; 

  • Maintain clean surfaces and working space in the theatre and tech booth;

  • This is a learning on the job role and will also entail the following requirements: watch videos of productions, acting exercises and other professional materials as required;

  • with the help of a mentor learn how to evaluate professional theatre’s elements;participate in learning activities about professional companies (employers), funding bodies and grants;
  • Complete delegated tasks such as research or reports or articles in a timely matter;
  • discuss and debate elements of professional productions and acting techniques;learn how to write and edit a blogpost under supervision and mentorship;
  • writing blog posts as required.

Reports to

Director, Artistic Director 

 

Requirements:  

  • Be available to work online and in person at our theatre (3650 Dixie Rd, Mississauga, ON L4Y 3V9) and studio (2359 Royal Windsor Drive Unit 210, Mississauga, ON L5J 4S9).
  • Be available for all dates and hours stated in contract.
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, have a PR, or refugee status.
  • Be between 18 – 30 years of age at the start of the program.

Education and Experience:

  • Formal Training or acceptable combination of equivalent experience in Technical Production, Technical Theatre, Production and Design or equivalent program.
  • Experience working with a variety of live performances including theatre, dance, and festivals.
  • Working knowledge stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; patron services; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Skills:

  • Operating audio and lighting equipment 
  • Lighting design
  • Sound Design
  • Experience with light/sound production software (ie. vectorworks, Capture, Qlab) 

 

Languages:

English. Knowledge of any other language is a plus. 

 

Additional Certifications:

Working at Heights Certification
