Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, with on-call as required

Program Description – Recovery Programs

Hope Mission’s Recovery Programs provide structured, long-term support for individuals working to overcome addiction and mental health challenges. Operating across multiple residential sites in Edmonton, these programs offer a recovery-oriented environment where clients receive individualized care, life skills development, therapeutic programming, and spiritual support. The interdisciplinary team works collaboratively to help clients build the stability, skills, and connections needed to transition toward housing and community participation.

Position Summary

The Occupational Therapist provides holistic, client-centred occupational therapy services that support individuals in recovery from addiction and mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. This role focuses on enhancing daily functioning, strengthening adaptive skills, and promoting engagement in meaningful activities. By restoring healthy routines, improving physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing, and building effective coping strategies, the Occupational Therapist plays a key role in fostering long-term recovery and community participation.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment & Treatment Planning

  • Conduct comprehensive occupational therapy assessments to identify functional barriers related to addiction, mental health, and daily living.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans that foster meaningful engagement and strengthen psychosocial stability to support participation in the recovery program.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions focused on coping strategies, stress management, life-skills development, and healthy routine building.

Therapeutic Programming

  • Facilitate group and individual sessions targeting emotional regulation, social skills, hygiene, and adaptive functioning.
  • Provide cognitive rehabilitation interventions to support attention, memory, organization, and executive functioning.
  • Create and maintain a trauma-informed environment that enhances clients’ sense of safety and supports their engagement in the recovery program.
  • Support clients in community reintegration, including participation in vocational, educational, recreational, and social activities.

Collaboration & Team Contribution

  • Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated and integrated client care.
  • Engage in case consultations, team meetings, and program planning to strengthen recovery-oriented services.

Documentation & Administration

  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation, treatment notes, progress reports, and assessments in accordance with agency standards.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials

  • Completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program.
  • Active registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
  • Training in suicide risk assessment and depression/anxiety assessments.
  • Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Welfare Check, is required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training is an asset; training will be provided if needed.

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented practice, client-centred care, and culturally and spiritually safe approaches.
  • Strong ability to design and adapt therapeutic activities based on client interests, functional needs, and recovery goals.
  • Training and experience in specialized trauma therapies such as DBT and CBT is an asset.
  • Training or experience in exposure-based interventions to support clients with trauma in adapting to the recovery environment is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to remain flexible, open to change, and responsive to shifting clinical and program needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Other Requirements

  • As a Christian organization, Hope Mission requires employees to sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Able to provide a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • A letter of reference from a ministry or church is an asset.
  • Adherence to Hope Mission’s policies and procedures.
  • This is an in-office role with frequent meetings at various Hope Mission facilities across the city.
