Within Family Preservation and Reunification Services, our Family Day Program serves families with children 0-4 years of age in a supportive learning environment in a group setting. This “day treatment” program promotes improved parent-child interactions and focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship.

Job Summary:

The Family Day Counselor plans, implements and delivers the day-treatment program. This position assists families in strengthening the parent-child relationship by nurturing healthy attachment, modelling practical hands-on parenting skills and facilitating psycho-educational groups. This position helps identify goals and needs of families, and works in collaboration with Family Counselors and Social Workers.



  • Utilize coaching, modelling and behavioural interaction skills in a variety of settings, such as playroom, parent education group, and at meal times to promote improved parent-child interaction
  • Assess and provide parenting skill building around parent-child interaction, family functioning and needs, children’s developmental and affective needs, discipline and guidance, and behavior management                       
  • Develop goals in collaboration with clients and family counsellors, and re-develop those goals as necessary.            
  • Develop and implement a support and intervention plan in collaboration with clients and family counsellors.
  • Provide regular 1:1 check-ins with clients for ongoing individual support and guidance, and assist in problem-solving related to family functioning.
  • Enter weekly case notes using existing on-line case management system.
  • Conduct parent-child reviews and provide written summary reports.
  • Liaise with family counsellors and social workers on a regular basis to report clients’ progress, discuss case plan, and evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
  • Plan, prepare and facilitate psycho-educational groups focusing on early childhood development using therapeutic techniques drawn from theoretical frameworks such as Attachment.
  • Assist in the daily physical set up of the Family Day Program.
  • Assist in making purchases for the Family Day Program, as needed.
  • In addition to the responsibilities above, the Family Day Program Counsellor will also assume other duties when the Group Coordinator is away.
  • At end of each session review/evaluate effectiveness of program delivery and plan accordingly for next session.
  • Train and work with volunteer child minders.
  • Liaise with Group Coordinator regularly regarding recruiting volunteer child minders as needed.

Education / Experience

  • Master’s degree preferred in Social Work (MSW) or Clinical Counselling (MA) with a minimum of 3 years in a related field, or will consider a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with extensive experience

Job Specific Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to work with families who may present multiple service needs related to poverty, addictions, violence, child abuse or neglect, intergenerational trauma, and various mental health issues
  • Ability to work with families from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • In-depth knowledge of early childhood development, particularly ages 0 – 4
  • Knowledge of and ability to coach and model positive parent-child interaction
  • Ability to work well in an on-site team and with referring Family Counsellors and Social Workers
  • An understanding of integrated case management / wrap around service delivery
  • Knowledge of child welfare policies and practices
  • Working knowledge of different parenting strategies and the ability to share these strategies with families
  • Knowledge of applicable therapeutic modalities
  • In-depth knowledge of child abuse dynamics
  • Excellent crisis intervention skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including telephone, in-person and presentation skills
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write reports, etc.
  • Computer skills, including MS Word, Outlook and Internet


Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of criminal record check
  • Standard First Aid Certificate, or training provided
  • This position operates on Thursdays and Fridays (8:30 am – 4:30 pm) with the option of attending monthly team meetings and/or clinical forums on Wednesdays.
