CCSA is currently studying the impact and effectiveness of cannabis policies, regulations and programs, and mobilizing this knowledge. Evidence from this initiative is intended to inform the development of policies, programs and practices in optimizing a public health approach to non-medical cannabis use, as well as the three-year review of the Cannabis Act (2021).

Reporting to the Associate Director, Research, the Research Analyst and Coordinator will support initiatives aligned with CCSA’s cannabis activities, including the ongoing coordination and synthesis of research being conducted through external contracts. The Research Analyst and Coordinator will also conduct research and respond to research requests (both internal to CCSA and external) relevant to CCSA’s cannabis priorities.

Responsibilities

Conduct Research

  • Facilitate and initiate national research initiatives in the substance use and addiction fields, with an emphasis on cannabis
  • Collaborate with researchers and knowledge brokers within CCSA and with those of other agencies to determine the nature and scope of the required studies
  • Contribute to the strategic development of CCSA's cannabis research program
  • Perform internal quality peer reviews of research proposals, analyses, results and reports
  • Determine the appropriate research methods, analytical techniques, designs, models, scope, timelines and costs of research projects
  • Determine data or information requirements and negotiate agreements with other organizations or government bodies to obtain data
  • Gather information and contribute to or perform quantitative and qualitative analyses as required
  • Perform knowledge syntheses and critically appraise and evaluate research
  • Participate in comprehensive sex and gender based analyses of evidence, data and reporting
  • Review and evaluate research proposals developed internally or externally by relevant stakeholders or organizations
  • Conduct research knowledge syntheses or identify existing syntheses to inform policy and practice
  • Prepare reports with conclusions and recommendations or proposals for further study

Research Coordination

  • Draft, evaluate and, in collaboration with the Director, Research, negotiate and execute research contracts
  • Coordinate multisite research initiatives
  • Prepare ethics applications for review by research ethics boards
  • Ensure that any project concerns or risks are communicated to the Director and Associate Director, Research
  • Develop detailed work plans to track progress and timelines of projects
  • Create and maintain thorough project documentation
  • Track and review deliverables, including project budgets, and ensure that concerns or risks to the successful completion of deliverables are communicated to the Associate Director
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD in an addiction-related field or post-doctoral training in an addiction-related field
  • 2–4 years’ of related experience in a health research environment, including the social sciences, population health, epidemiology, psychology or clinical sciences, related to the addiction field
  • Ability to understand, express and apply quantitative and qualitative analyses, concepts, methods and procedures
  • Experience with research coordination and project management, including budget management
  • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and produce and coordinate projects with tight timelines
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience leading and managing multiple complex projects

Assets

  • Strong knowledge base and research background and experience in the field of substance use and addiction, with a focus on cannabis
  • Experience effectively liaising with local, national and international stakeholders from various sectors
  • Training in, and experience with, sex-, gender-, diversity- and equity-based research and analysis techniques
  • Bilingual French and English
