Children’s Pastor Job Description

The 180 Church
Department: Children’s Ministry
Responsible to: Lead Pastor
Responsible for: Children’s Ministry Programming
Allotted Hours:20 + hours per week
Vacation: Starting at 2 weeks per year

o Has acknowledged Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.
o College degree that is preferably in Christian Education, Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Education; or comparable experience.
o Strong track record of leading, recruiting, organizing and training leadership teams.
o Proven ability to communicate God’s truth effectively through a variety of methods to fit multiple learning styles.
o Administrative experience related to managing and developing teams.
o Ability to comfort, encourage, and guide children and families during difficult life circumstances.
o Good research skills.
o Experience in a church (or Christian organization) and community related children’s ministry or program.
o Knowledge of curriculum and teaching methods.

Ministry Context:

The person called to this ministry will be in agreement with the 180 Church and CMA Statement of faith and directional statements, which describe the mission, vision and core values of this church. The incumbent must also have the leadership qualifications outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7.

Primary Focus:
1. The pastor called to this ministry will need the spiritual maturity, experience, and spiritual giftedness to lead and provide oversight to the leaders of several teams within the CM programs.
2. The pastor will develop and empower ministry teams to assist in teaching, and leading worship in age appropriate classrooms and large group settings.
3. The pastor will be available to provide comfort, encouragement and guidance to children and their families during difficult life circumstances.
4. The pastor will effectively administrate and oversee all aspects of CM.

Ministry Responsibilities

1. Children’s Ministry Department Leadership

a. Coordinate all aspects of CM by acting as the department head. This will require strong communication with key leaders on the CM teams (Nursery, Pre-School, Grade School, Day Camp, etc.)
b. Evaluate CM programs on a regular basis with the key program leaders.

Ministry Staff Recruitment and Training
c. Develop, coordinate, and implement recruitment strategies for all CM programs.
d. Oversee the orientation and training of new and returning workers in each ministry.
e. Screen new volunteers.
f. Develop and oversee the ongoing equipping and encouragement of all ministry workers.

2. Kids Connection (Sunday Programs)

Teaching Program Oversight
a. Participate in the choosing and/or development of curriculum appropriate for each age group.
b. Ensure that all supplies are prepared and available for Sunday each group.
c. Coordinate a worship component within the weekly program for each age group.

Program Team Development
d. Develop ministry teams large enough to effective carry out the program during the gathering(s) These teams will include: Registration Desk Attendants, Teachers, Helpers, and Musicians, and may also extend to include dramatic elements.
e. Oversee the recruitment and development of ministry team members from all demographics of the congregation to serve in all the above mentions areas of Kids Connection.

Training of Volunteers
f. Facilitate practice and training sessions for the members of the program teams serving in children’s ministry (such as Plan to Protect).
g. Oversee and be directly responsible for the observation and mentoring of children’s ministry teachers and helpers.
h. Plan volunteer appreciation events to encourage the CM workers, and to assist in team building.


3. Summer Ministry

**Day Camp
a. Apply for grants and funding to run a day camp program.
b. Develop registration and program with Director.
c. Provide basic training for Camp workers.
d. Provide oversight, guidance, and encouragement for the Day Camp Director.
e. Be responsible for the development of the Day Camp which will run for 8 weeks each summer.
f. Ensure that appropriate resources are available to the Day Camp staff.

Kids Ministry
g. Coordinate a summer format of children’s ministry making use of volunteers who have not served during the regular schedule, and giving a break to others.

4. Pastoral Relations
a. As a member of the Pastoral team, participate in Pastoral Meetings, and ensure strong communication ties with other Pastors.
b. To preach or actively participate in the large Sunday morning gathering as requested (minimally 4 times a year).
c. Participate in, contribute to, and be prepared for: staff meetings and events.
d. Prepare written reports for the Lead Pastor and Board of Directors as requested.

5. Other Responsibilities
a. Participate in outreach events where children are involved by attending and providing assistance as needed.
b. Complete evaluation annually and participate in supervisor with the Lead Pastor or direct supervisor.
