The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) is seeking three (3) summer students for the position of Aquatic Monitoring Assistant.

May 4th to August 28, 2020 (17 Weeks)



The aquatic monitoring assistant will be working both independently and as part of a group on various projects in streams and wetlands located within the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) jurisdiction. Aquatic information will generally be collected in accordance with the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network Protocol, Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol and the Durham Region Coastal Wetland Monitoring Project Protocol.


The work will be primarily in the field (approximately 70%) with the remaining time spent on various duties in the office (e.g. data entry).


Field work will involve some physically demanding tasks, e.g. electrofishing, turtle monitoring, carrying equipment, seine netting, working in waders, etc. The aquatic monitoring assistant will be comfortable working around water, in inclement weather, extreme temperatures and around insects. Office work will consist primarily of data entry using Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Excel and Access) and ArcMap. The assistant will conduct himself or herself in an appropriate manner suitable for an office environment.


These positions pay a wage of $16.43 per hour based on a 35-hour work week. There is a possibility of occasional evening/weekend work. The employee must comply with CLOCA’s Health and Safety Policy.



The successful candidate should have the following:

* University or college experience in biology/natural resources

* Comfort working in the field

* Computer skills (ArcMap knowledge is an asset)

* Valid Ontario driver's license and current first aid/CPR certification

* Pleasure Craft Operators Card

* Transportation to CLOCA office

* Fish and benthic invertebrate identification experience

* Electrofishing certification is an asset

* Student must provide and wear green patch safety boots. Other required safety equipment as prescribed in the Health & Safety Manual is provided by the employer


To be eligible, you must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment (international students are not eligible); and, have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
