Every year, one in five people live with a mental health problem or illness. The highest rate of mental problems and illness is among young adults ages 20-29 and for most people with mental illness, it begins in adolescence. Youth dealing with mental illness need social support and a safe space to get help and be themselves. Laing House provides this space.

 

Founded in 2001, Laing House is a not for profit that delivers programming based on peer and social support for youth with mental illness who are seeking wellness and community. Programs include wellness workshops and assistance with housing, employment, and education, all with a focus on socialization and creating a space to belong. Laing House has a dedicated drop-in center in Halifax, and has recently expanded to provide support groups in Yarmouth and Sackville as well, so that youth can come to get the help they want and need. The peer-driven support at Laing House drives members to not just cope with their illness, but thrive.

 

Now, Laing House is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization forward in advancing its important mission to empower youth with mental illness through innovative engagement and peer support. Reporting to the Boards of Directors of the Laing House Association and of the Laing House Foundation, as Executive Director you will provide day-to-day leadership and oversight to Laing House’s activities, operations and programs to meet the goals and objectives of the organization. You will lead and inspire an engaged and committed team of 17 staff and foster a positive, inclusive and collaborative environment. You will work closely with the Boards in developing a new Strategic Plan and shaping the future of Laing House and its program and funding initiatives.

 

As the ideal candidate, you have a passion for the cause and the energy, strategic foresight and strong people and operational leadership experience. A natural relationship builder, you are known for your ability to quickly establish trust and connect with others in a meaningful way. Whether it is in a one-on-one conversation, or speaking publicly on behalf of your organization, you bring a proven ability to build strong relationships with donors, volunteers, and community partners alike. You bring solid business and financial acumen and experience providing effective financial and operational leadership within an organization. A highly collaborative and inclusive leader, you inspire and motivate others to achieve a shared vision and you are committed to empowering and supporting youth living with mental illness.
