Job Title:  Clinical Counsellor, Substance Use

Languages:  English & Punjabi

Status:  Permanent, Full Time, 35 hours per week

Schedule:  Sunday - Thursday

Hours:  Based on client needs but will require evening work (Monday - Thursday)

The Opportunity:

Working within our Counselling Services Department, the Clinical Counsellor, Substance Use will provide 1:1 counselling support, outreach and advocacy to South Asian men & women who struggle with addiction, including drugs, alcohol, and opiate use.  Services are delivered in English & Punjabi.  

This position will support the following programs:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide intake and screening to clients;
  • Complete assessments of individuals struggling with addiction and their readiness for psycho-educational group support;
  • Assumes the role of a primary counsellor when required, for individual counselling;
  • Liaises with relevant government, employee assistance programs, and community agencies for program promotion;
  • Leads community outreach with a focus on hard to reach individuals;
  • Make referrals to other services as needed;
  • Provide individual counselling to the client and/or individual family members using basic counselling techniques and Best Practices;
  • Completes other client-focused assessment as per funder guidelines (currently HONO’s, GAINS);
  • Work with the Clinical Supervisor for case consultation and review;
  • Work cooperatively with the clinical services team.

Qualified candidates will posses: 

  • Master's level university degree in counselling, psychology, social work or a related discipline is required;
  • Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) designation from the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors is preferred.  Individuals in the process of obtaining their designation may be considered;
  • Two years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
  • Fluency in Punjabi;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience facilitating groups;
  • Skills, knowledge and sensitivity on issues related to violence against immigrant and refugee women;
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and independently;
  • Class 5 BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.

This position requires union membership.  A Criminal Record Check is a requirement of employment.
