Reporting to the Resident Services Supervisor and working under the direction of the Food and Nutrition Worker, the Food and Nutrition Worker - Relief is responsible for solely preparing meals on occasional weekday shifts.   You will provide nutritious, home-style meals typically for lunch and dinner based on an international menu for our 37-bed shelter as well as support residents as they prepare their own meals.

This is a Relief position with an opportunity for casual work on an on-call basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in preparing, cooking and serving healthy daily lunches, dinners and snacks and ensure the variety and quantity meet the diverse needs of the resident clients.
  2. Support in maintaining all appropriate records, files, inventory checks and meal plans related to meal plans.
  3. Participate in compliance of hygiene and safety standards of the City of Toronto in food preparation and food storing processes. This includes labeling, storage and disposal of food supplies.
  4. Occasionally support, plan and prepare meals for in-house events (i.e. board meeting etc.).
  5. Participate in delivering weekly outdoor buffet style barbecue for residents during the summer months, as required and during any holiday celebrations.
  6. Ensure the cleanliness and compliance to safety and hygiene standards in the kitchen, dining room, food storage areas and when handling garbage containers.
  7. Ensure cleanliness of all food services related laundry.
  8. Contribute to team building activity at The Redwood by participating in meetings and other information sharing activities within the department or organization.

Education and Training

  1. Minimum of a high school diploma with one (1) year experience of working in Food and Beverage Industry, particularly in food production.
  2. Experience of working within an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework with diverse communities.
  3. Certification of health and safety standards and guidelines in food and beverage industry, acknowledged by the City of Toronto.
  4. Standard First Aid/ CPR certification.
  5. Able to stand for long duration of time.
  6. Able to multitask in a fast paces and dynamic work environment.
  7. Adhere to all policies, procedures, routines and requirements of The Redwood.
  8. Abide to The Redwood’s Code of Conduct.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  10. Ability to occasionally handle inquiries from upset or irate people and maintain a professional relationship with clients and coworkers.
  11. Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check)

Working Conditions

  1. Work in a kitchen environment with appliances and utensils (i.e. hot burners, fryers, grillers, open flame and knifes)
  2. This job may demand long working hours in a fast-paced environment to prepare and complete daily meals for shelter’s residents.
  3. Interacts with residents, staff and visitors.
  4. Occasional travel to purchase materials for food menu, as required.
  5. Available to work weekdays and/or weekends, as well as any shifts.

Wage: $18.62 per hour.
