Our client is a Vancouver based non-profit organization that provides assistance to clients with housing, life skills and community-based support to help them value the contributions they make to society.  They are looking for a strong Financial Controller to assist the organization in their quest to support clients with community reintegration, support with mental health and addictions, and learning how to be accountable to others and to be responsible for themselves.

Position Description

The Financial Controller will ensure that there are efficient financial processes in place, as well as timely, accurate, and reliable financial information to support the operational and strategic needs of the organization. In this position you will ensure the maintenance of the organization’s financial health and long-term sustainability as it continues to grow.

 Responsibilities

  • Ensures timely completion of all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank deposits, bank reconciliations, and month-end closing activities
  • Prepares and conducts analysis of monthly financial reports for managers, executive team and board
  • Ensures compliance with funder requirements and prepares financial reports for funders as required
  • Ensures compliance to financial reporting, financial policies, procedures and internal controls
  • Facilitates the development of the annual budget and monitors budget variances
  • Guides the development and implementation of the strategic plan while overseeing the financial processes for other not-for-profit partners across the province
  • Leads audit preparation and work completion required by the auditors for the annual audit
  • Identifies and supports collaboration with other organizations to develop key partnerships and innovative opportunities for the organization both internally and with other agencies
  • Actively participates as an external representative of the organization with community, stakeholders, and the public
  • Monitors pertinent funding information and sources for further funding opportunities

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a proven ability to work within a fast-paced, growth-focused non-profit environment. The ideal candidate has:

  • Successful completion of a university degree or diploma in accounting Skill and knowledge usually attained by successful completion of a degree or diploma in accounting or relevant field; or an equivalent combination of skill, knowledge and experience
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
  • 5+ hands-on progressive experience in full cycle accounting, including senior level accounting experience
  • High proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel
  • Strong familiarity with reporting standards for Not-For-Profit Organizations, practices, internal controls, and financial reporting
  • Proven ability to work with accounting systems - preference being given to candidates with direct experience using QuickBooks Enterprise
  • Ability to organize and manage time efficiently
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to actively listen to others
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of non-profit work environments, especially the Criminal Justice System and Developmental Disabilities
