Bootstraps Program Coordinator

 

Aunt Leah’s is seeking an exceptional Coordinator for our Bootstraps Program to provide full time coverage for a pregnancy/parental leave from July 2020 to approximately December 2021.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the right person to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our program participants.

 

Who we are: Aunt Leah’s Place helps prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless and mothers-in-need from losing custody of their children. To support them on their journey to self-sufficiency, we provide supported housing, job training, and coaching on essential life skills.

 

For 30 years, Aunt Leah’s Place has been helping kids in foster care and young mothers achieve a better future. We do this by providing guidance, supported housingjob training and coaching on essential life skills. We believe every individual deserves to feel safe, cared for, and have a sense of belonging. Unfortunately, this is not a reality for many teens in the foster care system. Over the years, we have seen how support at this critical time can help these young people realize their potential while becoming resilient, independent adults.

 

Job Summary: This is a leadership position to oversee, manage and expand Aunt Leah’s Place’s (ALP) current Bootstraps program to implement a new level of programing, funded through the Province of British Columbia, represented by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training to plan and Skills Link Federal Funding develop and implement the Employment of Youth from Care program. The objective of the Program is to increase the labour force participation and reduce the unemployment rate of Young Adults at Risk in British Columbia facing barriers to Employment.

 

The key areas of this position include Leadership and supervision of the Bootstraps Team and ensuring program meets funding deliverables which include monthly reporting and ongoing communications with Provincial and Federal funding officers.

 

Bootstraps Program: Bootstraps works with youth in and from care to identify goals and remove barriers to employment. Working collaboratively with Aunt Leah’s wrap-around services youth in and from care will have the opportunity to advance skills and be placed with engaged employers as they move forward toward their chosen career path.

Reports to: Director of Training & Social Enterprises

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2-years post-secondary education in a relevant field of study
  • Experience in employment counselling, facilitation of life skills development and/or community engagement is valuable
  • Criminal Record Check with Police Information Check from local RCMP
  • A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Driver’s Abstract
  • Proof of vehicle business insurance and $5 million liability
  • Ability to work flexible hours

  • Awareness & understanding around the impact on youth from trauma and inter-generational trauma resulting from colonial polices

 

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Bootstraps Employment Deliverables:

  • Develop, Plan and implement program activities.
  • Have a in depth understanding on all levels of work within the Bootstraps program
  • Formulate program policies and procedures and evaluate the program in consultation with the Director of Training and Social Enterprise
  • Oversee the day- to-day operations of the program by ensuring that the necessary facilities and equipment are in place, staffing levels are maintained, program guidelines and policies are adhered to, and program standards and funding requirements are met.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of the program’s frontline staff such as screening applicants, participating in interview panels and making hiring recommendations.
  • Supervise program staff by preforming duties such as assigning work, providing feedback on performance, conducting coaching meetings and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Orient, determine the need for and provide training to program staff.     
  • Monitor and authorize program expenditures and maintain financial records in accordance with established procedures and funding levels
  • Promote public awareness of and support for the program by working with the Aunt Leah’s communications team.
  • Liaise with community service providers and other professionals to coordinate service provision, facilitate referrals to the program and represent the organization or program. Work with the team to reach out to other private sector employers in order to create quality job opportunities for youth
  • Maintain related records and statistics and produce reports as required including Monthly Summary Report of Project Activities and all Progress Markers achieved by Participants and a forecast of Progress Markers and Expected Participant Outcomes.
  • Work with Case Manager to set youth candidates up for success by arranging for supports to be in place, including child care, transportation, work appropriate clothing and other supports as applicable
  • Support both employer and youth to achieve a successful employment experience through regular check-in, site visits, etc.
  • Provide leadership, support, and mentorship to youth and program staff
  • Work collaboratively with other program coordinators to ensure all Aunt Leah’s Participants have access to the Bootstraps Program

 

Youth from foster care come from a place where, in general, class-based learning interventions have been a failure. This socially innovative learning environment gives opportunities for tactile and ‘doing’ learning to set up these young people for future success and successful bridging to labour markets and/or future schooling. Therefore; implement innovative approaches for this proposed project through:

 

  • Providing multiple opportunities for different individual learning styles to develop essential employment skills
  • Offering a portion of their learning in a non-class based venue

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to act, engage and support youth through a trauma informed lens, or be willing to learn.
  • Supervisory and Team building skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to identify barriers to employment and appropriately address them
  • Ability to work closely with youth to facilitate sustainable employment, training and/or education
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders to ensure youth are set-up long term for employment success
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other program coordinators to incorporate and facilitate youth to access employment opportunities and training opportunities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including ability to manage high caseloads
  • Excellent administrative skills including database management
  • Ability to act, engage and support youth through a trauma informed lens, or be willing to learn.

Supervision and Leadership:

  • Provides supervision to the Bootstraps team including: chairing regular team meetings, individual coaching sessions and annual performance reviews.

 

Communication:

  • Using effective communication skills build trust and rapport and maintain effective working relationships with participants and staff to allow for the transfer of required information, and promote a co-operative and productive work environment
  • Attends team meetings, monthly Society Staff Development meetings
  • Participates as a member of the Health and Safety Committee
  • Informs past youth and mothers of events and activities taking place on a regular basis through email, Facebook and flyers
  • Liaises and seeks direction from Director of Training and Social Enterprises in crisis situations
  • Attends Society Events as directed by Director of Training and Social Enterprises
  • Follows Aunt Leah’s Policies and Procedures

          

Confidentiality: 

  • Ensures all information about residents in the program is strictly confidential both internally and externally
  • Ensures all written material is locked in the office and all phone calls regarding participants take place in the office
  • Follows Aunt Leah’s Society Policies and Procedures and Aunt Leah’s Code of Ethics (includes Child and Youth Care Association of BC Code of Ethics, Aunt Leah’s Privacy Policy, BC Rights of Youth in care & UN Rights of the Child)

 

Working Conditions:

  • This position may require working some evenings and weekends and travel to various locations within Metro Vancouver
  • Required to be an on call supervisor as scheduled
  • This position may be required to perform other related duties that do not affect the nature of the work.

Hours of Work: Generally Monday to Friday (37.5 hours a week; 7.5 hours/day); may require working some evenings and weekends
