Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and an expert in perishable food recovery. We believe surplus, unsold food from across the supply chain should be redirected to feed communities.

Our services help to nourish people through school programs, seniors’ centres, shelters, community meal programs, food banks, and regional food hubs while at the same time keeping good food out of landfill, protecting our atmosphere from GHG emissions that are contributing to climate change.

We lead the avoidable food waste conversation and promote waste reduction and food recovery wherever possible to benefit all of us – environmentally, economically and socially.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this position is responsible for providing strategic leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating Second Harvest’s Human Resources services. The Director, Human Resources will oversee all HR operations and will provide subject matter expertise in the following areas of practice: recruitment, talent management, and succession planning; training and development; health and safety; benefits/RRSP administration; and HRIS. The position will also lead and support various organizational development projects and initiatives.



  • Leads the development of Human Resources goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Guides management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, and updating policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines; communicates and enforces organizational values.
  • Supports management by providing Human Resources advice, counsel, and decisions for the purpose of ensuring consistent application of policies and procedures.
  • Monitors and advises managers and supervisors in the progressive discipline system of the company; monitors the implementation of a performance improvement process with non-performing employees; conducts investigations when employee complaints or concerns are brought forth.
  • Informs the CEO and Senior Management of significant problems that jeopardize the achievement of organizational goals, as well as challenges not being addressed adequately at the Management level.
  • Reviews, guides, and approves management recommendations for employment terminations and onboarding.
  • Designs, directs, and manages a company-wide strategy for organization development, including succession planning, superior workforce development, critical employee retention, organization design, and change management.
  • Identifies and monitors organization culture, providing recommendations to support the attainment of the company's goals and promote employee satisfaction.
  • Meets with Human Resources team routinely to provide strategic leadership for the HR function, discuss HR initiatives, issues, and areas for development.
  • Ensures that the HR service maintains and meets policies, practices, and procedures required to achieve and maintain quality standards.
  • In conjunction with the VP of Finance and Shared Services, monitors all pay practices and systems for effectiveness and cost containment.
  • Directs the preparation and maintenance of various HR reports as necessary or as requested, to track strategic goal accomplishment.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall goals of the organization.


  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or equivalent experience; Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation at minimum.
  • Minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of work experience in Human Resources (Generalist/Manager); experience working in a non-profit environment.
  • Solid technical Human Resources knowledge in a variety of functional areas (talent acquisition, succession planning, employee engagement, employee relations, policies and procedures development, compliance); broad knowledge of a variety of relevant legislation (i.e. Employment Standards, Human Rights Code, OHSA; WSIB).
  • Demonstrated experience in applying HR best practices to support senior management in achieving strategic objectives.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, coupled with superior customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability managing multiple priorities and projects; able to meet deadlines and handle a high volume of work.
  • Experience working with an HRIS system, with strong data processing ability.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Enthusiastic team player with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Keen attention to detail, thoroughness, and accuracy.
  • Professional attitude and able to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
