Under the direction of the Director, Four Directions Indigenous Student Centre, the Indigenous Advisor will work in collaboration with campus partners, including: faculty supports, the Division of Student Affairs, and others to provide culturally relevant, responsive, holistic student support services and programs to Indigenous students at Queen’s University.

 

The Indigenous Advisor is responsible for providing inclusive services for Indigenous students at Queen’s University, which includes the provision of academic advising, career counseling, and personal support services (e.g. study skills, finances, career goals, housing, etc.). The Advisor will develop, implement, and support university wide strategies and programs, and also provide information about relevant resources available at Queen’s and in the local community.

 

The overall goal of the Indigenous Advisor is to facilitate the well-being and success of Indigenous students at Queen’s by supporting students in living a healthy, balanced life academically, emotionally, spiritually and physically (i.e. to foster “pimadidiziwin”). The Indigenous Advisor is responsible for developing, providing, evaluating, and assessing student advising services, programs and projects for the university in order to support the academic success, personal success and development, and the wellness and retention of Indigenous students. They will work closely with relevant university stakeholders and Indigenous student leaders to identify best practices for developing services and programs.

 

Note: The schedule for this position may require the incumbent to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, according to program or area needs.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate and take an active role in the strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of FDISC programs and policies.
  • Provide expert support and guidance to Indigenous students helping them to develop a holistic view of academic, personal, financial, and career goals in order to balance academic, professional, social, and personal demands.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to refer students as needed to professional services, including Student Awards, Student Wellness Services, and other on campus and community resources.
  • Assist students requiring guidance on university degree and program requirements, and help students in contacting the appropriate academic advisor to ensure they meet degree requirements and selected program prerequisites.
  • Assist colleagues in peer supervision of student work positions, including the Peer Mentoring Programs, Bounce Back, the Living & Learning Community, etc.
  • Work closely with Indigenous student leaders and relevant university stakeholders to assess and provide advice on student wellness, leadership, and academic support programs on campus. Acknowledge diverse ideas and interests to develop, implement, and evaluate services and programs organization wide.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of events and programming designed to improve the Indigenous student experience and assist with the cultural and academic transition to Queen’s.
  • Advocate for/with Indigenous students as required to provide appropriate academic accommodations. Provide consultation/advice to members of faculty and staff on issues of concern regarding Indigenous student cultural transition issues related to performance or behaviour.
  • Assist in scholarship exploration for Indigenous students by creating and maintaining a current database of resources.
  • Develop and implement a long-term targeted and measurable plan for the provision of inclusive student support. Conduct ongoing reviews and updates for meeting the counseling/advising needs of Indigenous students.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain intentional retention programming and leadership opportunities for Indigenous students.
  • Maintain monthly statistics and reports and provide monthly updates as requested, for Aboriginal Council at Queen’s University.
  • Provide social and academic support to Indigenous graduate students to create a safe, culturally relevant environment for students, including coordination of the SAGE program (Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Student Experience) and online support for AWIES (Master of Education in Aboriginal & World Indigenous Education Studies) students.
  • Access internal Queen’s student data and financial processes using SOLUS, etc.
  • Conduct other duties as required in support of the unit.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:

  • Must have Indigenous ancestry and demonstrated connection with an Indigenous community and other Indigenous networks.
  • Minimum of an Undergraduate degree combined with 2 years’ relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of university programs and courses of study, and the general structure and operation of universities.
  • Experience in counseling/advising/supporting Indigenous students.
  • Familiarity with university life and activities and knowledge of university policies and priorities would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the needs and experiences of Indigenous students, with specific understanding of the complexity of cultural adjustment processes for Indigenous students entering university.
  • Leadership ability and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when required.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to articulate an Indigenous worldview within a post-secondary educational context.
  • Excellent interpersonal and counselling skills, with an ability to empathize and communicate effectively with Indigenous students and the university community.
  • Proven judgement and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to collaborate and work effectively in small and large groups both within and outside the university.
  • Coordination to bridge between Indigenous communities, individuals and the university.
  • Ability to network and collaborate to build partnerships with diverse student, faculty, staff, and the community.
  • The ability to organize, plan and self-initiate both short and long-term goals.
  • Computer literacy, which would facilitate team communication, advertising, and web site design.

DECISION-MAKING:

  • Assess urgency and complexity of student issues and needs, determining when to resolve issues and when to escalate issues to the appropriate university and community support services.
  • Identify needs and provide recommendations regarding the development of specialized programs for indigenous students.
  • Establish day-to-day work plan as well as broader advising, support and outreach strategies.
  • Identify services or functions that require improvement or determine when a new service should be offered and recommend appropriate solution. Participate in the implementation of modifications and introduction of new services as required.
  • Set work priorities to meet competing demands.
  • Determine priorities and make decisions about volunteers and student staff assignments.
  • Use effective judgement to anticipate and respond to difficult situations.
