WJS Canada is currently looking for individuals to join our Okanagan team, as casual / on call Residence Workers.

The Program:

Okanagan Community Living Residential Service is a residential program that offers supports to people with developmental disabilities. The Penticton Beach, Okanagan based residential program is housed in a large single family bungalow with an attached duplex, a large manicured yard and flowers along the walkways. Neighbours respect and support our residents. We are close to local restaurants and coffee shops. To encourage community inclusion, residents use public transportation although the program also has a vehicle.


The Positions and Scheduling:

The Casual Residence Worker with Overnight Awake scheduling (CRW) is part of a dynamic care-giver team and is responsible for assisting our persons served (PS) to live successfully in residential settings in an accredited agency. Ensures physical, emotional, social, educational, and medical needs are met. The CRW assists PS to enhance quality of life with activities of daily living and the development of life skills. Provides behavioural support and supervision in the program and community, implements and monitors individual program plans through observation and accurate reporting, and participates in operating and maintaining the program. This position requires union membership with BCGEU.


This position will work a variety of shifts that include weekdays, weekends and evening shifts that could include (but not limited to) scheduling of 0700-1500, 1500-2300 and 2300-0700. Casual shifts will cover vacation, sick time and extra staffing requirements, as needed, up to a maximum of 40 hours per week. The on-call / casual position has the potential to lead into a part-time or full-time role.


As an ideal candidate you possess:

  • Grade 12 education plus certificate or equivalent experience in related human/social service field
  • Current WCB Occupational First Aid, Level 1 (or ability to obtain within the probation period)
  • Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certificate and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within the probation period)
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract
  • Ability to use common computer applications required (training provided)

Other requirements:

  • Position requires; i) physician’s note confirming suitability, ii) negative tuberculosis screening test, and iii) successful criminal record check.
  • Successful candidate must sign an oath of confidentiality, a conflict of interest statement, abuse protocols and a code of ethics statement.
  • Willingness to work day, afternoon, and overnight-awake shifts.
  • Preference given to those with one year experience in a community based setting
  • Experience with Trauma Informed practices and Crisis Intervention
