Job Title:  Middle Years Activity Worker
Location:  North Delta

Status:  Temporary, Part Time - during school year
Anticipated Start Date:  October 6, 2020
End Date: June 2021 or end of school year

Hours: 7 hours weekly
Schedule:  Tuesdays & Fridays 
Hours:  2:15pm - 5:45pm

Closing Date: September 20, 2020

The Opportunity: 

DIVERSEcity is seeking a Middle Years Activity Worker to join our team.  The Middle Years Activity Worker will work with our Middle Years Coordinator to provide hands-on, experiential activities to build self- identity, community engagement and leadership skills for school-aged (K - 7) children as part of the School's Out Program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates community-based recreational, social and/or educational activities to meet clients’ needs;
  • Builds rapport with children, their families and school staff to create a safe and welcoming environment;
  • Collaborates with the after school program team to implement and evaluate activities as per program and child needs;
  • Encourages and facilitates child participation in activities while following the child’s interest and lead;
  • Ensures the safety of clients. Responds to emergencies in accordance with established policies and guidelines;
  • Maintains liaison with clients’ families, other community service providers and professionals;
  • Models, guides and responds to children’s behavior in an age-appropriate manner;
  • Maintains related records and statistics and produces reports are required.
Qualified candidates will possess:

  • Degree or diploma in related Child & Youth Care or human/social services field;
  • Minimum 1-year related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
  • Knowledge of child development and age appropriate care related to school aged children (grades K - 7);
  • Demonstrated experience engaging children with age-appropriate, culturally responsive activities;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multicultural team setting;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, second language is an asset;
  • Drivers licence and access to a vehicle is an asset;
  • Strong computer literacy skills (including MS Windows, MS Word, MS Works, MS Excel and the internet).

This position requires union membership.  A Criminal Record Check is a requirement of employment.  

Additional Information:

This position requires in-person support and will be located at Hellings Elementary in North Delta, remote work is not available for this role.  Programs will be offered only when school is in session and will not run during holiday breaks, including Christmas and Spring Break.  Recruitment is ongoing, shortlisted candidates may be contacted before closing date.
