Communications Coordinator, Kids and Teens in Control

 

BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) has a vision where those affected by schizophrenia and psychosis receive excellent treatment and services, and are accepted and included in their communities. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those affected by schizophrenia and psychosis through education, support, public policy, and research. Founded in 1982, BCSS is a charitable society with a head office in Vancouver, BC.

 

BC Schizophrenia Society’s Kids in Control and Teens in Control programs provide education and support for children and youth ages 8 to 18 years old who have a family member with mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, etc.). The programs are prevention-focused and aim to foster resilience. They provide children and youth with opportunities to practice healthy coping strategies, learn about mental illness, and connect with peers who share similar experiences. 

 

Communications Coordinator Position

 

The Communications Coordinator works closely with the Kids and Teens in Control Manager and Communications & Marketing Manager to support the growth and evolution of the Kids and Teens in Control programs by engaging with current program participants and contacts, and ensuring Kids and Teens in Control messaging reaches new audiences. The Communications Coordinator’s primary role is to coordinate and publish content on a variety of outlets (including online forums, social media platforms, web, and email channels), and to monitor and engage with audiences on social media channels and public forums. 

 

Position reports to: Kids and Teens in Control Manager 

 

Responsibilities:

Communications: 

  • Plan, produce, and publish content for social media channels, blog posts, webpages and newsletters
  • Coordinate and publish website content updates for the Kids and Teens in Control pages 
  • Edit web content for clarity and accuracy 
  • Translate research on mental illness and related topics into plain language for youth and their families
  • Source graphics for multiple audiences
  • Develop and update website directory listings, as needed

Social Media and Community Engagement: 

  • Plan and produce Kids and Teens in Control content for social media with a goal of engaging youth and youth organizations
  • Coordinate publishing schedule on social media channels 
  • Boost posts, coordinate, and track engagement as needed 
  • Monitor social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), like and comment on community contributions, respond to Inbox
  • Respond to incoming questions and notify managers of issues 
  • Engage with community members to ask for stories, collect and edit story submissions and photos, and collect permissions to share and distribute stories across all channels

Marketing & Administration: 

  • Update and assist with distribution of Kids and Teens in Control materials (i.e. booklets, posters, fact sheets, etc.)
  • Create a distribution list for youth organizations for program promotions
  • Handle general inquiries and admin requests for the programs
  • Other duties as assigned 

Education and Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience in communications or related experience 
  • Experience and knowledge in copywriting, proofreading, and editing 
  • Experience with social media in a professional setting. 
  • Experience creating content for youth and youth focused organizations
  • Experience translating research into plain language
  • Experience with content management platforms
  • Experience with WordPress platform
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or other graphics editing tools an asset

Requirements:

  • This position may require a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check.

Job Type:        Part-time (18-20 hrs/week), until March 31, 2021 with possibility of extension

Salary:             $23 per hour

Conditions:      Most work will be done remotely, however some duties will require the successful applicant to work in the office occasionally (to be coordinated with Manager)
