WJS Canada is currently looking for an individual to join our team in Maple Ridge, as a temporary Part-Time Residential Child and Youth Worker.

The Program

A two-bed, staffed residential home providing emergency placement services to youth with complex needs, who will receive individualized care. The length of stay varies depending on how soon alternate housing arrangements can be coordinated. A majority of the youth have experienced some form of trauma resulting in unhealthy coping mechanisms. Placements may occur at any time of day or night, depending on the needs of the youth. There is 1:1 staffing in each of the two units.

This emergency resource program is unique in that placements are identified by MCFD and may come from any regional MCFD offices throughout the lower mainland, from Hope to Vancouver.

 

The Position:

The Residential Child and Youth Worker cares for children and youth with moderate to severe behavioural problems, in an accredited residential program. As key worker for assigned persons served, the RCYW is responsible for overall development and care of those individuals. In conjunction with the individual’s care team, the RCYW assesses physical, psychological, social and developmental needs, and designs and implements individualized personal service plans and plans of care that address and meet those needs. The RCYW also participates in the operation and maintenance of the program. This position requires union membership with CUPE.

The successful candidates in these positions will have the skills and abilities to respond effectively to crisis situations, applying trauma informed practices and strength based approaches.

 

Scheduling:

One (1) Temporary Part-Time position with a weekly schedule of 32 hours:

  • Friday and Saturday 0700-1500
  • Sunday and Monday 0800-1600
  • Duration of this temporary position will be dependent on the return of the incumbent.

 

As an ideal candidate you possess:

  • Child and Youth Care Degree or Diploma OR a Diploma or Degree in one of the humanities, social work or related field. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years recent related experience in child and youth care, emergency shelter or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Previous experience with trauma informed practice
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract with a reliable, safe vehicle that has appropriate insurance

 

Other requirements:

  • Valid CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, and Food Hygiene and Sanitation certificates (or ability to obtain within probation period)
  • Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certificate (NVCI) and/or MANDT and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within probation period)
  • Physician’s note confirming suitability, including immunization records and a negative tuberculosis screening test
  • Prior experience with implementing Behavioural Interventions
  • Prior experience in Trauma Informed Practices

 

**Successful applicants will be required to participate in MCFD screening prior to confirmed employment with WJS Canada.**
