Who are we?

Parkgate Society is a registered, not-for-profit charitable society providing programs and services to our friends and neighbours at Parkgate Community Centre and satellite locations east of the Seymour River. Parkgate Society exists to serve the community and our team works in partnership with more than 350 volunteers to develop and deliver responsive programming that meets community need leveraging community resources. We provide services to youth and seniors.  We operate an  extensive child care and family services program. With more than 90 people on staff over the course of the year, we are a diverse and welcoming team committed to making this a great place to work, play and live. We value innovation, teamwork, excellence, collaboration, inclusiveness and accountability, and pride ourselves on being community-driven, community-inspired and community-supported.

What’s the job?

We are looking for our next great Youth Outreach Worker to work with our team of Youth Centre staff & volunteers, working with youth and encouraging them to live life better. The YOW focuses on community building and outreach to teens and preteens in our neighbourhood. This involves building relationships not only with youth, but also with our partners and other community agencies. This may involve, but is not limited to 1:1 support, group facilitation, drop-in programs, school presentations, out trips and larger community events. Our team’s emphasis is on prevention and restoration, and our support focuses on youth aged 10 – 24.

What will you do?

  • Engage and partner with youth centre staff & volunteers along with community partners to support and empower youth in the Mount Seymour and Deep Cove area;
  • Establish supportive relationships with youth, working with them personally as needed to encourage their best selves;
  • Support the Youth Centre Coordinator with supervising Youth Centre Workers and volunteers as needed;
  • Connect with Youth: In more typical times the expectation is to go out into our community, facilitating groups and events at the schools and within the community. Currently, the focus is to extend the support to youth beyond the school hours: utilizing Parkgate Society physical spaces to host groups, create safe and fun virtual spaces, and as well as meet 1 to 1 with youth both physically and virtually;
  • Connect with our Community: liaise with schools, other youth outreach workers, parents, local healthy authority, RCMP and other youth-related professionals in the field, working with them to promote the well-being of youth in our community;
  • Connect with our Team: Be an active, participating member of our staff team, attending meetings and planning sessions.

Who are we looking for?

Here’s what you bring to our awesome team:

At least two years of experience working with youth 10 – 24;

  • Amazing people skills and a proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with youth, parents, community partners, co-workers and volunteers;

  • Even more exceptional communications skills – you have a way with words in person and in writing;
  • Previous learning that demonstrates interest in and knowledge of best practice in the field of Child & Youth Care;
  • A demonstrated passion for youth and youth-related issues;
  • A Class 4 Drivers Licence, current First Aid (with CPR) & Foodsafe are all valuable assets; a willingness to get all of the above in the first 90 days of employment is required.
