The Position

 

Reporting to the Manager, Food Services and in accordance with Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society (NAHS) mission, strategic direction, principles and policies, the Sous Chef’s primary responsibilities are to prepare meals and assist with the management of NAHS kitchen staff. The Sous Chef is committed to working with vulnerable client groups in a friendly, accommodating and respectful manner, and acts responsibly when issues arise outside of regular duties.

 

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensure meals are prepared and served in a friendly, timely and efficient manner
  • Assist in updating and reviewing the dietary needs of tenants
  • Monitor kitchen and dining areas to identify issues; report any tenant or facility concerns to the Manager, Food Services
  • Anticipate and requisition supplies and equipment needed for kitchen duties
  • Organize and provide catering for NAHS special events
  • Initiate and carry out a diverse range of duties with limited supervision; work efficiently to manage tasks, time and resources
  • Adhere to highest standards of maintaining cleanliness and appearance; organize supplies and equipment inventory
  • Other related responsibilities as required

Preferred qualifications include:

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 1 year in a culinary program preferred plus 5 years’ experience as a cook
  • Experience working with dietary restrictions; ability to prepare a variety of nutritious and appealing meals; ability to understand and anticipate specific dietary needs
  • Experience meeting heavy and fast paced physical demands
  • Proven experience in the safe and appropriate use of kitchen equipment

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Sound knowledge of safe work practices, relevant WorkSafeBC requirements and responsibilities
  • Knowledge of current public health, hygiene and food handling safety practices and procedures
  • Superior organizational and prioritization abilities
  • Excellent communication and listening skills; effective interpersonal and conflict resolution experience
  • Ability to remain calm while performing multiple tasks in a demanding environment

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standing or walking throughout entire work shift
  • Frequent lifting and moving of objects up to 20 kg
  • Noisy and fast-paced work environment

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Food Safe certification Level 1
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • WHMIS Certification
  • Reliable transportation
