Program Description: The Career Foundation’s Completing the Circle is a youth employment and skills development project funded by Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS). Completing the Circle fosters the development of, and provide individualized support to, youth with multiple barriers to employment. Our team of career development experts provide links to employment opportunities for motivated youth job seekers. Program participants are empowered to find employment, equipped with tools, supports, new skills, and confidence to secure and maintain work. Through the program, participants take their first steps towards meaningful careers now and into the future. Our focus is on quality work opportunities for youth, employment maintenance and career advancement, professional development and training, and enhanced supports that are flexible and adaptable to the needs of youth.

Position Title:      Employment Advisor, Completing the Circle program 
Position Type:     1-year full time contract (very good possibility of renewal)
Location:             Toronto 
Reporting to:       Program Coordinator
Years of Experience:  2+
Start Date:           Immediately 

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Assists youth to develop transferrable workplace skills and life skills including teamwork, responsibility, self-confidence, and self-reliance in the areas of job search and job maintenance
  • Fosters job search and employability skills through one-on-one coaching
  • Demonstrates and discusses appropriate workplace skills and behaviours through workshops
  • Encourages youth participation in employability workshops
  • Assists youth in securing direct employment or 12 weeks of paid work experience leading to full-time permanent work
  • Assists with planning workshop schedule and booking guest presenters and guest speakers
  • Case manages and maintains documentation of allocated participant files/database, records of service and participant progress reports on internal database
  • Regularly monitors personal performance against program targets to ensure the achievement of the expected results for the project
  • Communicates with the Program Coordinator regarding participant performance in relation to contract requirements and the needs of the program
  • Accurately reports on participant case load and established action plans to ensure the success of participants during daily morning meetings and weekly case conferences
  • Orders office supplies and ensures items are stocked
  • Opens participants files and action plans in the internal database
  • Keeps case notes and conducts weekly check-ins
  • Helps with purchasing and distributing participants supports

FACILITATION AND ONE ON ONE COACHING (75%)

  • Presents the program to community partners and applicants ensuring they understand the program objectives and the time requirements
  • Conducts accurate assessments of applicants based on program eligibility requirements and ensures all mandatory forms are completed
  • Researches, develops and delivers an engaging group job search strategies program, suitable for multi barriered youth, that can be delivered in person or online
  • Professionally presents information to youth on topics including effective job search strategies, accessing the hidden job market, cold-calling, job posting analysis, salary negotiation, health & safety, resume & cover letter writing, developing strong references and successful interview techniques
  • Motivates clients through enthusiastic presentations and encourages participation in all topics covered
  • Assists youth in the development of appropriate work habits, behaviours and attitudes during their participation in the program and in the workplace
  • Possess strong familiarity with community partners, employers and stakeholders within the Peel and Halton regions
  • Provides individual job coaching, encouraging youth to apply the skills learned in the program
  • Works one-on-one with high risk youth participants in developing skills related to creating effective self-marketing materials (résumés, cover letters, references and thank you letters)
  • Coaches youth on interview preparation and presentation
  • Discusses life skills with youth in a diplomatic and tactful manner
  • Oversees the Job Search area and assists youth with online job search
  • Maintains job search area with relevant information and resources
  • Provides youth with referral information for other services in the community
  • Logs clients job search activities and other supports provided
  • Updates participant database and documents activities and outcomes
  • Contacts youth on a weekly basis for update on employment status
  • Assists in developing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly report

JOB DEVELOPMENT (25%)

  • Coaches youth on interview preparation and self-presentation
  • Discusses life skills with youth in a diplomatic and tactful manner
  • Assists youth with their job search and contacting employers to broker interviews
  • Provides youth with referral information for other services in the community
  • Maintains a log of client job search activities and other supports provided
  • Conducts outreach to employers and generates employment opportunities for youth between the ages of 15-30
  • Initiates and maintains accurate documentation of contacted employers, job leads and any other job development activities
  • Provides effective individual and group job search and cold calling support
  • Maintains job postings and employer boards

Qualifications/ Skills Required:

  • University degree in human services or related is required
  • A minimum of 2 years direct service experience working with multi barriered youth, providing employment/career counselling, facilitation and program delivery
  • Flexible and adaptable to work effectively with a diverse population of youth with significant barriers to employment
  • Equipped to work remotely from home with adequate internet capabilities and ability to work from various Career Foundation sites, as needed
  • Knowledge of online communication platforms, techniques and tools (e.g. Zoom). Experience facilitating online workshops with a high-level of youth participant engagement and completion
  • Experience working with employers to facilitate youth employment remotely and onsite.
  • Strong knowledge of community and services provided outside of employment
  • Strong command of English, and a second language would be an asset
  • Experience in maintaining a participant case load and files
  • Previous experience working with government funded programs is an asset  
  • Knowledge of the current labour market trends, the impact of COVID-19 on the labour market, job search techniques and employment research methods
  • Flexible team player – Willingness to take initiative to lend assistance where needed to ensure that the team is successful in meeting project goals
  • Ability to work remotely from home if needed
