The Edmonton Humane Society has been an animal welfare leader in the Edmonton community since 1907. We are more than a shelter. EHS plays a key role in the Edmonton region by enriching the lives of people and their companion animals not only through our sheltering, but through our programs, services and community engagement.

 

The Role

Reporting to Manager, Animal Health, a Shelter Veterinarian provides support, guidance, and expertise to the shelter in the areas of medicine and surgery. This position will provide exciting opportunities to lead best practices in sheltering for sick or injured animals while maintaining EHS vision of excellence in the advancement of animal welfare.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities

This position has several responsibilties as outlined below:

  • Perform elective surgeries as required with the primary focus on spay/neuter surgeries including pediatrics.
  • Perform dental, soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.
  • Examine, evaluate, and prescribe treatment or course of action for any animals that are not found to be medically or behaviorally sound.
  • Hig quality record keepings of all animals requiring special cae or attention.
  • Contribute to medical and surgical protoco; design and improvement .
  • Education and Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a veterinarian
  • Strong interest in shelter medicine.
  • Direct experience in shelter medicine and the ability to peroform orthopedic surgery is an asset.

Skills and Abilities

As an ideal candidate, you will have an advanced knowledge of companion animals, including exotic species, as well as ability to perform high volume spay/neuter surgeries. You have the ability to work both independently and within a team and demonstrate an ability to work well in stressful situations and adapt accordingly.

 

Compensation/Hours

Compensation: EHS offers a competitive Not-For-Profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.

Hours: 30 hours a week or less; is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
