Director, Finance & Administration


Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the Director, Finance & Administration is responsible for leading the finance function to ensure sound financial administration, reporting and planning.  They will ensure strong internal controls, legal, tax and regulatory compliance and supports the year-end audit process.  The position supports senior leadership and board governance activities.  They are also responsible for the management of the Markham Office facility. 


This role includes, but is not limited to:


Finance, Treasury and Risk Management

  • Oversee financial operations - the accounts payable, gift processing, cash disbursement, financial report preparation and cash disbursement functions
  • Enable Planning: Facilitate the development of budgets, forecasts and multi-year plans;
  • Provide informative management reports: issue accurate and timely internal reports to guide decision making;
  • Mitigate Risk: Maintain adequate internal controls, develop and implement appropriate policies to improve risk;
  • Enable continuous improvement: Design and execute changes to optimize efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Ensure compliance: adhere to accepted accounting standards for non-profits, regulatory, legal and tax requirements;
  • Manage banking, hedging and investment management relationships: ensure strong treasury, foreign exchange management and investment management practices are in place;
  • Support the work of external auditors.    

Payroll and Group Benefits

  • Lead the Canadian payroll function ensuring compliance with regulations; assist colleagues with payroll oversight activities overseas;
  • Assist with the selection and oversight of benefits and retirement services providers and plans. 


  • Oversee Markham Office facilities activities; manage mailroom operations, facility maintenance and repairs and building security. Identify needed capital improvements.   Select and supervise vendors as needed;
  • Serve as point of contact for urgent facilities-related matters at the Markham office. 


  • Staff Management: Lead, coach and support staff to enable these to excel; provide training and assistance as needed. Provide ongoing feedback;    
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise to finance staff around the world to ensure best practices are in use and established policies are employed;
  • Serve as back-up to the Chief Operations Officer;
  • Execute other duties as assigned. 

The ideal candidate possesses: 

  • University degree in a related discipline (Business, Commerce, etc.)
  • Professional Accounting designation – CPA (formerly CA/CGA/CMA)
  • 10+ years’ experience in a senior managerial capacity in finance; non-profit organization experience strongly preferred; NGO experience desirable
  • Experience leading, managing and motivating a diverse team of accounting professionals to achieve optimum performance
  • Thorough technical knowledge of accounting rules, practices, principles and controls and the full monthly and yearly financial reporting and accounting cycle
  • Experience developing and updating financial policies and related procedures supporting appropriate internal controls
  • Strong understanding of registered charity tax and legal requirements
  • Thorough understanding of Fund Accounting and the Deferral Method of not-for-profit accounting standards
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, review and optimize internal processes and controls
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to speak and/or write in either French or Spanish will be considered an asset

Location: The office is located at 1200 Denison Street, Markham, ON. Staff are currently working from home with some flexibility on in-office activity until further notice (due to Covid-19 related health precautions).
