Family Support Worker (COVID Response – 4-month contract)

Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill a full time 4 month contract position ofFamily Support Worker.
The Family Support Worker provides essential emergency and ongoing supports to help families living in poverty meet their daily basic needs, improve their quality of life, and provide their children with a brighter future within an outreach support model. Supports can include advocacy, referrals, and enhancing the capacity of families to care for their children, and administers the Health for Two Program.
Specific responsibilities of the position include:
Increased support with financial empowerment, tax filing, and benefits applications so families can access the financial supports available to them.
Delivery of emergency supplies to families as they stay isolated and practice appropriate social distancing. This will include the purchase of diapers, formula, baby clothing, child entertainment items to continue healthy play at home, food hamper supplies, and more.
Family supports will transition to an outreach model and will deliver items as well as provide telephone and online supports where possible.
Provide gift cards to families of $200 each so that they can meet their unique needs that fall outside of the above provided supplies on an as needed basis
Make appropriate referrals to health and community services and, when necessary, advocate for families to receive those services
Provide crisis intervention support as required
General and Administrative
Maintain accurate written file notes, computer records, program information, and critical incident reports within established time standards
Provide latest program information and updated statistics as required
Maintain and submit accurate mileage and expense logs for reimbursement
Participate in probationary and annual performance reviews
Attend scheduled staff and supervision meetings
Perform other duties as required
The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
Degree or Diploma in related area
Minimum 1-year related employment experience
Alberta Class 5 License, satisfactory driver’s abstract, proof of liability insurance and a vehicle
CVITP registration is an asset
Strong written and oral communication skills
Effective assessment skill and ability to collaboratively develop goal plans with parents and evaluate their attainment
Knowledgeable about community resources and health services (including obstetrical and general care)
Ability to establish rapport and trust with the participants
Strong ability to advocate
Strong problem solving skills and ability to prioritize and multi-task
Ability to be self-directed and work well within a team
Ability to develop productive working relationships with program participants and community agencies
Knowledgeable about pre and post natal supports
Knowledgeable about Child and Youth Enhancement Act
Familiarity with issues of poverty and Edmonton’s urban core
