Position: English Instructor
Program: Adult Literacy and Skills Development
Number of Hours: 50 hours, starting from February 2021.
Class Schedule: Tue. & Thu., 6:00 pm -8:00 pm.

Salary: $30/per hour

Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) is a registered charity serving the needs of youth, seniors, and adults in Greater Edmonton. Our mission is to foster individual participation and action to improve the comprehensive and holistic health of diverse communities. Our programs aim to build the capacity of individuals and groups to improve their lives and communities through a unique community-building process, including support, mentoring and training.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Curriculum Development & Planning
  • Plan lessons for each class.
  • Incorporate visual and audio-visual resources into the lessons allowing the students to develop their English communication skills rather than only writing skills.
  • Locate and utilize EAL teaching resources to enrich the lessons.
  1. Teaching English as another language
  • Teach EAL during the scheduled class time according to the curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Use teaching techniques that will encourage students to learn, practice, and apply what they have learned.
  • Create a positive and encouraging learning atmosphere that promotes confidence-building.
  • Offer opportunities for students to ask questions and request clarification on lessons and related subjects during the lessons.

Qualifications

  • A certificate in teaching English as Second Language (TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, etc.), or a degree in English plus a minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching English to diverse populations.
  • Experience teaching to diverse groups of people, in particular, to senior students, with various levels of English language learning.
  • The ability to fluently speak Somali is required.
