Youth Worker

Part-Time: 18 hours/week Wage: $18 per hour

Temporary Term: January 4, 2021 – March 31, 2021

The Youth Worker is responsible for providing support to immigrant and refugee youth. This position will plan and facilitate creative activities that connect newcomer and Canadian youth in schools even during COVID-19 times, in-person and online afterschool programs from our office or other locations, and work one-to-one with multi-barriered youth. The Youth Worker meets youth from a wide variety of backgrounds and provides them with professional support in all situations.



  • Plans and facilitates engaging and creative activities that can be delivered via online or in-person methods in assigned schools
  • Plans and facilitates after school homework support, leadership, and recreation activities that can be delivered in-person and via online services 
  • Plans and facilitates special programs during school breaks, including field trips done in the fall, winter, and spring breaks as well as the summer holidays
  • Connects with teachers, counselors, and colleagues from different programs at Archway to identify new immigrant youth  
  • Connects with newly arrived youth at assigned schools; prepares and designs creative ways to reach targeted youth and recruit them for lunch time and after school programs  
  • Performs intake and needs assessment on youth who are new to the program 
  • Ensures that client files and the program’s report cards remain up to date
  • Remains attentive to the program and colleagues’ updates on SharePoint
  • Refers youth to appropriate services at Archway and in the community 
  • Provides one-to-one support, including outreach, case management and wraparound goals for multi-barriered youth 
  • Maintains records on clients, ensure all files are complete with information clearly and precisely documented while maintaining client confidentiality 
  • Connects with families and guardians as necessary   
  • Transports youth to and from programs  
  • Transports multi-barriered youth to needed appointments
  • Picks up items from different stores for the program’s operation
  • Prepares snacks and clean up  
  • Enters program attendance and one-to-one sessions into funder’s database (iCare); assists with quarterly and annual reporting 
  • Recruits volunteer youth to support immigrant youth  
  • Design and maintain advertising through print media, posters, displays, and brochures.

Requirements and Qualifications


Education and Certification:

  • Two years post-secondary education in a youth-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean driving record
  • First Aid certificate
  • Maintain satisfactory criminal records check


  • At least 2 years' experience engaging and working with youth and/or people from diverse backgrounds

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Well-developed written, verbal, and active listening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people with a variety of language abilities
  • Ability to keep accurate records and carry out duties with a degree of independence
  • Well-developed organizational and computer skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Strong facilitation and cross-cultural skills
  • Positive team player who is able to work independently and accept directions as needed
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in a language other than English (especially Arabic) is an asset


  • Willingness to work in a classroom with about six students in addition to another youth worker while keeping in compliance with government regulations regarding COVID-19.
  • This position includes driving clients to their home on occasions (in compliance with government regulations regarding COVID-19).
