As a senior fundraising professional reporting to the Executive Director of Development & Partnerships, Faculty of Health Sciences, with accountability to the Dean of Health Sciences , the Senior Development Officer, Faculty of Health Sciences  is responsible for identifying, evaluating, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a diverse portfolio of accounts and donor relationships.

 

This position requires the incumbent to regularly travel and work evenings and weekends, and is subject to the Averaging and Travel Time Credit provisions of the USW Local 2010 Collective Agreement.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Nurtures and develops sustainable long-term relationships that will result in the highest level of philanthropic support for initiatives in the Faculty of Health Sciences including the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Therapy.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Advancement, donors, volunteers and other university project administrators to maximize private funding for top university priorities.
  • Motivates, organizes and gains commitment from a broad range of influential volunteers and university senior administrators who will assist in securing philanthropic commitments, especially those related to scholarships.
  • Develops strategies, executes the plan and negotiates as required to meet objectives. Develops a multi-year plan of goals with precise deadlines to maximize private funding for university priorities and to coincide with the goals of the university and the Department of Development to execute the plan of the assigned project.
  • Meets with the Executive Director on a regular basis to review progress against annual goals and prospect strategy development.
  • Identifies, evaluates, cultivates and canvasses appropriate prospective donors (including individuals, corporations and foundations) with a primary focus on securing major gifts above $25,000; many of these donors may be new prospects to Queen’s identified for the first time for this particular project, thereby requiring a great deal of creativity and time in cultivation.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth knowledge of the Faculty/University’s activities, priorities and needs in both teaching and research. Applies this knowledge in matching the interests and needs of prospective donors with the strategic needs of the university.
  • Analyzes data, tracks activity and prepares reports, including up-to-date prospect pipeline and active proposal evaluations required to formulate, execute, evaluate and benchmark strategic and priority driven implementation plans.
  • Communicates regularly with other staff members in the Office of Advancement to coordinate the solicitation of prospective donors and to stay abreast of any relevant developments and/or legislation that may assist in maximizing philanthropic revenue.
  • Carries out special projects, as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate university degree.
  • Minimum five years of relevant, successful experience in fundraising, preferably in a university setting.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of the components of an effective fundraising operation including campaign fundraising, major and principal giving, annual giving and gift planning.
  • Demonstrated success in the identification, evaluation, cultivation, stewardship and face-to-face solicitation of gifts.
  • Experience in program analysis, tracking and reporting results.
  • Proven skill in recruiting, supervising and motivating diverse volunteers to achieve shared priorities.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian philanthropic environment and supporting legislation; understanding of philanthropic trends in the higher education sector.
  • Professional fundraising certificate is an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check
  • Valid G-Class driver’s license and passport with no travel restrictions considered an asset.
  • Consideration given to an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and practical experience in a relevant field.

  • Able to lead and manage long-term and productive relationships with alumni, donors, friends, volunteers, faculty, staff and senior university administrators.
  • Ability to assess the interests and needs of prospective donors and match them to the strategic needs of the university. The ability to identify optimal approaches to win cooperation from campus partners – faculties, libraries, departments – in support of stakeholder engagement and fundraising strategies.
  • Superior communication (verbal and written), presentation, diplomacy and negotiation skills to gather information and concisely deliver key messages.
  • Ability to fulfill the needs of the assigned faculty while working as a team with the rest of Development to ensure that the best interests of the university are served.
  • Ability to recommend and implement a project plan based on sound fundraising principles and the best interests of the university.
  • Superior computer skills, including Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office suite. Experience with large database management systems, preferably in a networked environment including Advance.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with an ability to compile, analyze and interpret data from a variety of sources, select appropriate methods of analysis, monitor emerging trends and issues, and disseminate information.
  • Ability to make difficult and complex decisions with tact, maturity, good judgment and acute sensitivity to the political environment and to the reputation of the Office of Advancement and the university.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to juggle conflicting priorities from many different sources flawlessly, while working within tight timeframes and a demanding workload.
  • Superior attention to detail.

DECISION-MAKING:

  • Develops, selects and implements fundraising strategies to maximize philanthropic revenue and donor engagement goals for the university.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, determines content of annual and multi-year plans and strategies based on sound fundraising principles and in the best interest of the university.
  • Determines optimal and most effective implementation of innovative strategies to manage critical and/or challenging donor relationships. Assesses the interests and needs of prospective donors and determines best match to the strategic needs of the university.
  • Identities the most effective strategy for maximizing charitable gift revenues from individual prospects.
  • Determines strategy to raise renewal and upgrade rates among those slated for solicitation. Modifies this approach through the year. Identities most effective strategy for maximizing relationships, including researching and identifying volunteer leadership in support of solicitation activities as appropriate.
  • Makes recommendations on the highest strategic use of the roles of Chancellor, the Principal, Vice-Principals, Deans, Department Heads, and top university volunteers (including members of the Board of Trustees Advisory Boards and Dean’s Council) in fundraising cultivation or solicitation.
  • Decides when to call on other staff members in Advancement to take advantage of their expertise.
  • Anticipates, analyzes and solves problems and recommends solutions.
  • Identifies resource needs to optimize program delivery in a fixed resource environment.
