Position Title:                         Volunteer Coordinator


Status:                                    Full-time (Some evenings and weekends required)


Location:                                Currently located in Downsview Park with plans to move to the Rouge Park area in 2021


Reports to:                              Operations Manager


Start Date:                              As soon as possible


Compensation:                       TBD, Commensurate with experience


Position Summary:


TWC is operated by a small group of highly skilled, paid staff, supported by several hundred volunteers who work in all areas, from wildlife care to administration.  Volunteers range from teenagers to seniors and come from all walks of life; some have been giving their time for many years and new volunteers are joining us regularly.


The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing the volunteer team, coordinating and developing the Volunteer Program and liaising with other TWC programs and other external organizations as needed. This position requires experience working with volunteers, a strong administrative background, multi-tasking, and the ability to prioritize and communicate well in a fast-paced environment. As an environmental organization working with hundreds of species, including some at-risk species, we could not do our critical work without our volunteers.



  • Provide a positive, professional and safe working environment at all times
  • Volunteer management including: recruitment, selection, orientation, scheduling, training, attendance monitoring and maintenance of volunteer records and data
  • Lead volunteer information sessions for interested volunteer candidates
  • Liaise with TWC staff and volunteers to ensure that all departmental volunteer needs are met
  • Keep abreast of current volunteer management methods through literature perusal, conference attendance, networking and other means
  • Evaluate, update and expand existing programs, protocols/manuals and other material as needed
  • Develop new and innovative ways of improving experiences and recognizing achievements of volunteers
  • Responsible for retention of volunteers through recognition, conflict resolution, regular communication, relationship building, and other means
  • Assist with setting of Volunteer Program goals and strategic planning
  • In collaboration with TWC’s Communications team, manage and develop engaging content for TWC’s Volunteer Facebook Group
  • Provide information to the Executive Director and Operations Manager for assessing Volunteer Program budget for the next fiscal year
  • Manage, supervise and support the Assistant Volunteer Coordinator

Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a volunteer management program or related experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing a medium to large volunteer program in a professional setting

  • Valid driver’s license; access to own vehicle for occasional use an advantage
  • Genuine concern for and understanding of wildlife and environmental issues
  • Familiarity with social media and being an administrator on a Facebook group
