The Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver (EFry) is a charitable organization that supports women, girls and children at risk, involved in or affected by the justice system. Our programs work to break the cycle of poverty, addiction, mental illness, homelessness and crime.

Operating throughout the Lower Mainland, this position assists low-income families to access federal and provincial education savings grants for children by opening no-fee and zero contribution Registered Educational Savings Plans (RESP). Their children are entitled to receive up to $3,200 to aid for their education after high school.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We seek someone to help and follow up with families taking practical steps towards saving for their children’s education. To do so requires applying for government benefits, filing their taxes, and potentially addressing related issues. This facilitator makes presentations on the program to inform individuals, and key stakeholders of this important benefit for children, the link to doing so with increased child graduation and later income, and the steps involved to open an RESP account through the financial institution of the client’s choice. This position involves community outreach, strategy building and various administrative functions to reach departmental goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Presentations in person and through electronic means
• Attendance in person or virtual to assist clients with navigating the process depending on the option chosen to Service Canada, ICBC, local bank or credit union
• As requested assist clients to develop personal budgets and set and achieve personal financial goals
• Provide community navigation to enable assistance with free tax preparation and filing; or other needed services
• Maintain accurate records regarding activities
• Collaborate with community stakeholders to provide information to marginalized clients regarding the program and services; and support enhanced financial literacy

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Related undergraduate degree/diploma or a combination of education and experience
• Previous experience working in Community Development and/or retail banking and of money management is an asset

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Strong commitment to engagement of marginalized and racialized communities (Black, Indigenous, and persons of colour)
• Proficiency in Microsoft programs and apps
• Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s license
• Must be a self-starter and able to work independently and meet demanding timelines
