The Edmonton Humane Society has been an animal welfare leader in the Edmonton community since 1907. We are more than a shelter and a safe haven for thousands of animals in our care each year, We play a key role in the Edmonton region by enriching the lives of people and their companion animals not only through our sheltering, but thorugh our programs, ssrevices and community engagement.

 

The Role

The Registered Veterinary Technologist provides care directly related to the health of animals at the shelter. The position will provide exciting opportunities to work with alongside both internal and external members of the community while maintaining EHS mission, vision and values.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for a variety of functions as follows:

  • Medicating, deworming, weighing, vaccinating, wound care, x-rays, fecal and urine analysis, in house lab work, snap tests, animal health reminders rounds and re-checks.
  • Assist veterinarians in care of animals requiring further care (diagnostic work ups, implementing veterinary treatment plans, follow-up treatments, rechecks).
  • Entry Examinations (health exam, vaccinate, enter results into computer) on all animals entering shelter.
  • Foster animal exams, treatments, and follow-ups.
  • Pre-medicating for surgery and surgery prepping, monitoring anesthesia and post-op recovery, aiding vet when needed.
  • Providing education for clients/adopters on animal health and care as required for animals being adopted that may require a higher level of care post adoption or has needs specific to a health concern or surgery performed

Education and Requirements

  • Accredited Animal Health Technology Diploma
  • Yearly ABMVA license renewal
  • 15 credits of continuing education yearly

Skills and Abilities

As the ideal candidate, you will have a passion for people, performance and diversity (and of course animal welfare). Your have ability to work alone or as a team and has an ability to work well in stressful situations and adapt accordingly.

 

Compensation/Hours

Compensation: EHS offers a competitive Not-For-Profit compensation package which includes a comphrensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.

 

Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities and some evenings and weekends may be required.
