The Hospital Employees’ Union is the voice of more than 50,000 health care workers and is the largest, oldest health care union in B.C. The union takes pride in its strong social justice principles, and in its formidable track record of protecting and advancing health care workers’ rights on a large, tangible scale over its 76-year history.
The HEU’s chief executive officer (called the Secretary-Business Manager) was recently elected to the provincial legislature in a snap election. Her replacement will play a unique and impactful role providing overall leadership to an important union at a pivotal point as HEU members face the ongoing challenges of a global pandemic and embrace the opportunities presented by renewed public interest in health care reform.
The Secretary-Business Manager provides strategic leadership to the operational wing of the union by serving as the chief executive of this $40M organization. This role serves as chief spokesperson for the union.
This is an ideal position for an inspirational people leader who is passionate about playing a pivotal role in the working lives of tens of thousands of health care workers, and by extension, the health care experience of countless patients, residents, clients and their families.
Likely an experienced leader in a labour or social justice organization working to improve conditions and rights for workers and/or under-represented or marginalized populations, this individual will ideally bring expertise around bargaining and labour relations, and experience working with an elected Board of Directors or similar governing body. Financial acumen and a track record of building capacity across a large team will be important.
Essential to the success of the next SBM will be an ability to relate to the membership, and bring voice to the essential contributions made by all who are part of the organization, and to embrace and promote an equity, diversity and inclusion agenda at all levels of the union.
