Hijrah Critica & The Refugee Centre are seeking a new Managing Editor!


Hijrah Crítica is a new online platform that will provide space for critical commentary, research, art, and testimonials on the experience of migration in the Canadian context.


As a multimedia curator and virtual hub, Hijrah Crítica will accept submissions employing diverse forms of communication including written text, podcast episodes, films, and photographs. Driven by inclusion, the platform will cast a wide net for contributors from diverse communities, including newcomers, practitioners, and scholars. Hijrah Crítica is hosted by The Refugee Centre, a Montreal-based refugee, and immigrant community organization.

While there are already academic journals focused on the Canadian context, Hijrah Crítica strives to be intersectional, interdisciplinary and intermedia, providing alternative narratives, visions and insights on Canada’s immigration system.


Managing Editor Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the flow of submissions and ensure the inclusion of fresh, relevant, and informative content.
  • Direct the creation of new content and determine when and how to resurface prior work during relevant news.
  • Help the team and the editorial board craft and refine ideas, cultivate sources, report, and innovate on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for editing explainers written by our contributors.
  • Oversee social media, graphics, and web production.
  • Collaborate closely with the Refugee Centre and the editorial board to ensure the aims and objectives of Hijrah Critica are met.
  • Brainstorm new stories, series, concepts, themes, and formats as needed.

Editor Qualifications / Skills:

  • Strong editorial background and proofreading skills
  • Experience adhering to editorial and technical style guides
  • Oral and written communication, Video and Audio editing is also a plus.
  • Comfortable with frequent cross-functional and senior management contact
  • Ability to speak more than one language is preferred.

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Media or related field
  • Any experience in content creation or editing, including online publishing
  • Experience with web creation platforms and related content-management tools
