POSITION SUMMARY

Are you passionate about the health of our watershed and looking to make a meaningful impact in your community? Do you love spreading the word about how we can help keep our river clean and what factors are contributing to harming its ecosystem?

Ottawa Riverkeeper is seeking an inquisitive and adventurous biology or environmental science student with excellent interpersonal skills to join our dynamic team as a Water Quality Intern. Reporting to the Director of Science and Policy, the Water Quality Intern will work with our science team to collect data on the health of our watershed. They will also have an important role in educating and inspiring local communities on how to better take care of the waters where we live, work and play during different events, workshops, presentations etc.

The intern will develop her or his planning, communication and presentation skills, and gain experience in speaking with and presenting to diverse audiences in both official languages. Working with a registered charity in the environmental sector during its busiest time of the year, the intern will learn to set objectives and implement plans to accomplish them, work with an enthusiastic and committed team, all while engaging our community on the vitally important environmental and public health issue of clean water.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct water quality testing on site, possibly with community members in order to educate all ages with the assistance of scientific tools.
  • Travel to local beaches to complete regular monitoring activities.
  • Collect and analyse water samples for our Citizens Science Hub.
  • Collaborate with members of the Communications team to provide regular updates about various factors impacting water quality.
  • Mobilise the community to get involved in diverting and reducing the presence of harmful substances and plastic waste.
  • Ensure that Swim Guide, an app used by the public throughout the summer, is updated in a timely manner and the information presented is accurate.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to communicate effectively in both French and English
  • Have a valid drivers licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Post secondary student in a related field
  • Able to work both independently and within a team.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects, timelines and deadlines in a fast-paced and responsive environment;
  • Highly organized, able to meet deadlines, detail-oriented;
  • Able to manage time and projects independently;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; self-starting and good at problem solving;
  • Have a passion for the outdoors and environmental issues
