Master Trainer/Public Education Specialist


Rent Smart Education and Support Society is currently seeking a perceptive and energetic full-time Public Education Specialist. This is a growth position.

Salary: $27.00 per hour, 37.5 hours per week

Extended Health and Dental Benefits following 3-month probationary period

This is a non-union position; travel may be required (Post COVID-19)

Position Overview

Rent Smart Education and Support Society (formerly Rent Smart Education Association of BC) was founded with a mission to increase housing stability through education. We achieve this through the RentSmart© program which provides education on residential tenancy legislation, financial literacy, effective communication, managing conflict, and maintaining a home. From a small regional program, we have grown to a network of over 1000 educators. We are currently active in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba with potential to expand to other provinces and territories.


Master Trainers are an integral part of the Regional, Provincial and National Rent Smart Education and Support Society’s team. Master Trainers are directly involved in the successful education model that works to prevent homelessness and increase housing stability. With a strong knowledge of RentSmart Programs, the Master Trainer utilizes extensive facilitation skills and transformative adult education principles to prepare and inspire participants to become effective Community Educators.


As the Public Education Specialist, you will be delivering the RentSmart© Curriculum virtually or in community settings. You will use asset based, learner centered approaches to engage diverse learners and create safe and supportive learning environment. You will be committed to continuous improvement and evolution of the curriculum to meet learner and community needs.

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

Public Education Specialist

  • Plans, implements and delivers (virtually or in-person) RentSmart© Certificate and RentSmart© Basics courses and custom courses as identified by community partners.
  • Maintains related records, statistics and produces reports as required
  • Participate in curriculum development and modifications for current and new initiatives
  • Adapt curriculum to meet the needs of learners
  • Designs education materials necessary for the successful implementation of the RentSmart© program
  • Deliberately identifies the needs of learners as a priority and creates opportunity to enhance their experience of the RentSmart program

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • Demonstrated high level of facilitation skills
  • Experience delivering accessible education to a range of vulnerable populations
  • At least two years relevant experience providing group facilitation of community based programs
  • Experience teaching facilitation skills an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, counseling, facilitation and conflict management skills
  • Knowledge of Human Centered Design is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong collaborative relationships, work effectively as part of a team, use good judgement, manage conflicts constructively, work with a high degree of independence and be accountable for results
  • Ability to reflect, promote, and protect the culture and integrity of the agency and the services it provides, and to manage situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed in meeting program goals
  • Advanced proficiency in time management and organizational skill
  • Knowledge of Residential Tenancy Legislation and housing issues an asset
  • High level of proficiency in MS Office suite, Zoom, Teams and other related virtual facilitation tools
  • Ability to adapt and learn about new software
  • Post Secondary education in the social sciences or human services or a related discipline is preferred


  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Clearance for Vulnerable Sector
  • Use of personal vehicle
  • A valid BC Drivers License
  • Flexible work schedule based on 37.5 hour work week – day, evening and occasional weekend hours as required
  • Remote working will be required therefor a quiet work location with wifi connection is required – computer, printer and stationary will be provided by Rent Smart Education and Support Society.
  • Documentation that applicant is legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Upon hiring, successful completion of RentSmart© Educator and or Master Trainer on-boarding process
