Music Coordinator/Chaplain

Position Purpose Summary:


The Music Coordinator/Chaplain provides music ministry oversight at Harbour Light as key component of his calling to provide Christian based pastoral care services for clients and staff.




  • Acts as Music Coordinator and leads Joyful Noise Choir.
  • Provides music at Reflections as well as special services.
  • Leads music electives or rehearsals for clients and provides basic instruction in music to groups and/or individuals.
  • Speaks at Reflections.
  • Provides spiritual counsel/guidance to Harbour Light clients, staff and community members. Counsel may require grief-care and conflict resolution skills.
  • Prays with and or leads people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits.
  • Assists, advises, refers, corrects or guides addiction treatment program clients in supportive recovery.
  • Conducts interviews related to addiction treatment and other program participants, as required
  • Attends staff department meetings, assists with, and participates in specific assigned administrative duties.
  •  Assists clients towards achieving personal and spiritual well-being.
  •  Works as a team member of the Chaplaincy team and other community agencies.
  • Maintains written records and logs of activity reports and statistical information on  Shared Drive
  • May lead or assist in leading 12 Step Spiritual Journey, Bible study and other small groups.
  • Assists Chaplaincy team in organizing and supervising client outings, other client related activities or events.
  • Assists Chaplaincy team in organizing and leading prayer meetings, client memorial services, and all special services. 
  • Assists Food line with prayers before meals, and distribution of SA materials.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Spiritual Care, recruits, interviews, trains, orientates, documents, and monitors all chaplaincy volunteers.
  • Liaises with representatives of other faith communities as needed
  • Is knowledgeable about and acts in accordance with security procedures of the organization to ensure safety and confidentiality of information.
  • Assists with organizing physical décor and set-up of chapel and other pastoral care areas.
  • Serves on The Salvation Army councils and committees as required.

·         The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

·         The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may be responsible as a group/work leader.

·         The position description will be reviewed at least annually. Changes or adjustments will be made following interaction with the Executive Director or Designate.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.



The incumbent’s work environment is typically in an office in a ministry unit/social services facility.
He/She will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with Mental Health issues
  • Warm inside temperatures
  • Odour
  • Isolation
  • Crisis Situations



The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (violent clients)
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to bodily fluids
  • Other potentially dangerous situations



The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Hand wash with anti-bacterial soap
  • Aware of client issues


Qualifications and Education requirements:



·         The successful job applicant will have completed up to two (2) years of Community College.

  • Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent
  • Certified or Licensed by chaplain’s local denomination (if not Salvation Army).
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR


·         Two to five years of related experience in chaplaincy/pastoral position in a musical ministry context, e.g. hired to lead worship in a church setting or other professional music experience

Required Skills/Knowledge:

·         The performance of the job requires attentive listening, analyzing, and providing guidance.

  • Knowledge of substance addictions, practical knowledge of life skills, ability to provide spiritual guidance and support, a (spiritual/emotional) understanding of the human heart and a desire to learn on the job essential. Practical experience is a valuable asset.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Windows and Office

Other Requirements:

·         The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of standing, walking, assisting clients in wheel chairs/walkers, intervening in physical confrontations, and some data input. The incumbent is required to lift up to 10 pounds.

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • Current Driver's license in British Columbia
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training


HOURS: Mon – Fri, 8.00am to 4.00 pm. flexible hours may be negotiated.
