Position: Educational Technologist D2L (Full time, one year term)

 

Location: This role is not location specific. Candidates can be based anywhere in Canada. Working from home is required on an ongoing basis if located outside of Calgary. Currently, Momentum staff are mostly working from home, as per public health orders.

What you’ll be doing:

As a member of the Curriculum & Learning team, you will support Momentum to reach its goal of offering high-quality online programs, grounded in adult education principles, that are experiential and participant centred. Online learning will be designed to address the needs, strengths, and challenges of Momentum’s participants.

 

This position will work with programs across the organization to support participants to build sustainable livelihoods. Programs at Momentum are in three departments: Skills Training (trades and technology), Local Economy Development (self-employment and business development), and Financial Empowerment (workshops and matched savings).

 

Key Responsibility Areas (overview):

  • Develop participant engagement in D2L courses using available interactive tools (70% of role)
  • Support instructors, facilitators, and participants to maximize experience in D2L (25% of role)
  • Departmental and community involvement (5% of role)

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Would be excited to join Momentum’s Curriculum & Learning team to translate our online learning vision into reality.
  • Enjoys collaborating with teams.
  • Can effectively foster new ideas and possibilities to enhance D2L course experiences.
  • Has effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates patience when supporting new users (staff and participants) in D2L.
  • Pursues up-to-date online teaching practices and evolving methods of engaging online learners.
  • Is a self-starter and can execute work independently.

 

Do your skills and experience match these requirements?

  • 3 to 5 years experience developing interactive course elements in D2L Brightspace (and must have built courses on D2L Brightspace within the last 12 months).
  • Background in adult education and sparking learner interest and engagement.
  • Skilled at creating experiences for participants with barriers to learning (e.g., low literacy).
  • Experience in Microsoft 365 (particularly Word, SharePoint, and MS Teams).
  • Ability to understand and update HTML/CSS is an asset.
  • Familiarity with mobile and responsive web development is an asset. 

 

Momentum is especially interested in candidates who bring this additional experience:

  • Experience working in a D2L Brightspace Administrator role:
  • Enrolling participants and staff on course offerings
  • Creating and managing Organizational Units – Course Templates and Course Offerings
  • Setting up courses in the Course catalogue

Major Responsibilities:

 

Develop participant engagement in D2L courses using available interactive tools

  • Transform text-based curriculum into innovative, interactive online courses in D2L Brightspace.
  • Incorporate adult and experiential education principles into the design of learning tools.
  • Design storyboards for graphics, animations, and video.
  • Support set-up of course components such as quizzes, assessments, discussions, gradebooks, badges, AI agents, gamification, animation tools, and integration of external tools (i.e., SCORM packages and Gomo), and other objects.
  • Work on a variety of projects: reworking materials, designing new activities, bringing course content to life through video and animation, as well as updating the look and feel of courses.
  • Create and maintain a variety of rich learning experiences which may include learning objects, course material, web pages, graphical user interfaces, animations, and video.
  • Migrate, upload, and integrate content from/to various platforms with considerations of digital functions.

Support Instructors, Facilitators and Participants to maximize experience in D2L

  • Provide training and support for Instructors and Facilitators in D2L Brightspace.
  • Support participant training in D2L.
  • Build training materials to support D2L users.

 

Departmental and Community Involvement

  • Development of a broad network of relationships throughout organization to support online learning efforts and contribute to organization-wide success.
