Reporting to the Director of Learning Enhancement and Distance Studies (LEADS), the Associate Director, Instructional Design and Curriculum Development is responsible for leading and overseeing online initiatives within the Faculty of Arts and Science and managing the Instructional Design team to develop online and blended courses and to support curriculum redevelopment projects. The Associate Director, Curriculum Development and Instructional Design manages the planning, implementation and evaluation of online course development, and supports the training of faculty and teaching assistants, especially those new to teaching. The Associate Director, Curriculum Development and Instructional Design works in partnership with faculty and staff to expand and enhance learning opportunities across the Faculty.



  • Oversees project plans in support of the vision and goals for the unit, including refinement of production and instructional models based on evidence-based teaching practices to maintain the University’s competitive advantage in online and innovative teaching and
  • Advises on, and evaluates the implementation of, inclusive design and practices to maximize diversity and inclusion in course/curricular development, accommodating and reflecting a wide range of learner needs and identities, consistent with AODA and Queen’s equity and inclusion policies.
  • Plans, implements and manages the Faculty’s online and/or blended course development This includes providing strategic interventions/supports, in consultation with course development teams, to ensure that quality courses are developed in a timely manner.
  • Manages and implements quality assurance processes. This includes working with the Instructional Design team in developing curriculum submissions for new online or blended
  • Assigns Instructional Designers to course development project and arranges first project meetings to bring together the design team, faculty member and key stakeholders to convey expectations and responsibilities for the
  • Negotiates and implements agreements with departments for course development and revision projects.
  • Oversees the development of onboarding programs and training opportunities for instructors and teaching assistants, and the provision of just-in-time teaching and learning resources for faculty to access online.
  • Seeks out information on new and emerging methodologies, technologies and processes to inform effective course design and delivery.
  • Evaluates research on teaching and learning to implement new evidence-based practices that will enhance learning, and improve the student and instructor experiences.
  • Conducts research as needed to evaluate program effectiveness; identifies and analyses student behavior using learning analytics to inform course improvements.
  • Represents Arts and Science and Arts and Science Online on University advisory committees on teaching and learning, , Consults with the Centre for Teaching and Learning and educational support professionals in other Faculties to promote opportunities for collaboration and sharing practices, instructional design strategies, technology needs.
  • Plans, prioritizes and manages the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and Identifies the need for staff resources, participates on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.

  • Masters in Education, Instructional Design, Distance/Online Education, Educational Technology or related
  • 5 years of experience in the development and delivery of online curriculum within a post-secondary environment.
  • 2 years of experience managing a team, including managing employee performance, project planning and management, and budget management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) to be able to consult with and mediate among and between individuals, teams, and
  • Demonstrated success cultivating and maintaining positive working relationships with faculty and
  • Knowledge and experience using educational technologies.

  • Determines the scheduling of course developments and revisions projects and assigns Instructional Designers to the instructional designers by balancing workload, individual strengths, the course discipline and the faculty member's experience in online teaching and
  • Researches, evaluates and identifies best-practices and quality standards for course design and recommends
  • Assesses and recommends adoption of educational technology tools to improve student and faculty experience in keeping with advancements in learning Selects develops and implements as required.
  • Makes independent decisions regarding recommended approaches to support online teaching and Identifies training opportunities for faculty and determines methods of delivery. Oversees implementation.
