Hours: Part-time (14 hours/week) 

Reports To:  Active Citizenship Manager

Location: Remote Work

Position Summary 


The Active Citizenship Outreach Worker will support NYCH’s new Active Citizenship project – an exciting new collaborative initiative with project partners, immigrant and refugee-serving organizations across the province, newcomers and other stakeholders. The project will involve co-designing civic engagement curriculum and programs that will support newcomers to develop the skills, knowledge, confidence and connections they need to play a strong, active role in civic areas.

We are seeking an Active Citizenship Outreach Worker to support the design and rollout of the province-wide Active Citizenship project. The Active Citizenship Outreach Worker will support the Active Citizenship Manager and Active Citizenship Coordinator in outreach and stakeholder engagement activities with newcomers and the immigration/refugee settlement sector.


Main responsibilities include:

  • Works with NYCH internal staff, as well as newcomer/racialized populations to develop a strong understanding of issues affecting newcomers and their communities, including their experiences related to civic engagement
  • In collaboration with the Active Citizenship Manager and Active Citizenship Coordinator, develops and executes plans for project outreach and stakeholder engagement activities, with a focus on newcomers and staff at immigration/refugee serving agencies
  • Facilitates group and individual conversations with newcomers through online, phone, and (if applicable) in person formats
  • Conducts outreach and handles meeting logistics, including setting up online and/or in-person meetings and spaces, addressing accessibility and barriers to participation, tracking registration for focus groups, etc.
  • Supports development of ways to tell newcomer stories, e.g. “profile cards” and “journey maps”, which highlight the unique challenges, barriers, enablers and strengths related to newcomers engaging civically
  • Creates, distills, and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data from stakeholder engagement activities with newcomers and agency staff in the immigration/refugee sector
  • Occasionally supports the development, delivery and evaluation of community-based research activities for newcomer communities in Ontario
  • Supports Active Citizenship Manager in project reporting and evaluation activities, including through the production of statistical and narrative reports
  • Develops and maintains positive working relations with partner organizations and other organizations to collaborate on Active Citizenship project activities, specifically as they relate to outreach
  • Works with Active Citizenship team, project partners and newcomer clients to create a community of newcomers supporting the project
  • Attends and participates in project meetings with Active Citizenship team and project partners
  • Attends workshops and training designed for staff development and growth


Required Qualifications



  • The minimum level of education required is a degree/diploma in social sciences, community/settlement, adult education, or a related field


Experience, Competencies and Skills

  • 1-3 years of experience working in community-based non-profits and/or with newcomer and racialized communities
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in civic engagement and community development, with strong understanding of steps for taking collective action
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining effective relationships with newcomers
  • Knowledge of newcomers to Canada – strong understanding of common issues faced, support needs around immigration and settlement process
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting outreach, both in-person and online
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating meetings and/or workshops
  • Written and verbal communication – strong writing and note-taking skills, active listener and ability to communicate clearly and concisely Excellent time management, attention to detail, and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Self-development, self-control, self-awareness, accountability
  • Anti-oppression – identify areas within scope of position where anti-oppression work can be improved and bring forward to senior/management with any recommendations for training, policies or procedures; model anti-oppressive behavior and adhere to anti-oppression policies
  • French language abilities are considered an asset


Other Requirements:

Typically works regular hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with occasional evening/weekend work. Responsible for carrying/caring for a laptop and cell phone.


A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required when necessary for the position.
